ONLY PAPER IN GRANT COUNTY.
Official Paper For Grant County.

t
THE LAST ISSUE OF VOLUME ONE.
With this issue the Grant County
News closes its first volume. It is
now a year since we started the pa
per; and during that time we have
labored assiduously to give the peo
ple of this county a live local paper,
one that faithfully represents the
important interests of this section.
How well we have succeeded we
leave the public to judge for them
selves; but the fact that the subscrip
tion list has moro than doubled is
evidence that our efforts have been
appreciated. "We have doubtless
made some enemies. No newspaper
man who has ideas of his own and
dares to express them, can get along
without receiving the wrath of those
whose views are antagonistic. But
we are glad to say that the latter are
far outnumbered by a host of warm
friends who appreciate our efforts to
build ivp a live paper. We said in
our salutatory that we believed in
the future of Grant Countv. After
over thirteen months residence here
we can say that our faith in its even
tually becoming one of the most pop
ulous and popular counties in south
eastern Oregon is greater than it
was a year ago, for it has the natur
al advantages; all it needs is the pop
ulation and capital to develop its re
sources. A good local paper can do
more toward this than anything else,
and .we shall always labor with this
end in view. We desire to thank
our correspondents, and especially
"T", of Harney, for the interest ta
ken by them in the News and the
county. We hope the-, as well as
others, will take a greater interest
the coming year. To our advertisers
we say "bravo". During the year
wTe have lost but one advertisement
unnaturally. Of our future we will
have something to say next week.
Please remember that the year is up
to-day and renew at once.
Notice. All political communica
tions from either party, or from any
one interested in politics must be
accompanied by the cash or the
equivclant or said communications
will not appear. Remember that
the News is as free for one as for the
other. It knows no party.
The bill introduced by Senator
Slater to provide for the completion
of the Oregon and California rail
road is a co)y of the bill recently in
troduced by Representative Whitea
ker authorizing the Oregon legisla
ture to dc?i opiate the corporation to
complete the road in case of failure
by the present company within the
specified time.
