SlIEPIJKUD, Editor NUTf?AL r POLITICS UNOER ALL cinrcurtftsTAKces. The Newspaper Boom. j The paper mills in the East have raised a "pirper boom," not only have they done that, but they have and are still raising the newspaper proprietors out of an unreasonable amount of cash. In the last three months the price of printing paper has advanced 70 per cent, and still it "booms." In view of the swindle the leading eastern journals have either discard ed their supi.leincnts, reduced their jwrpcr in size or raised their rates. The Chicago Times raised its sub scription rates, but on account of loss of patronage had to return to the old rates. The proprietors say it will cost them $100,000 more this year than the year previous. The Tribune decreased the size of their sheet, and the St Louis papers now charge octs. per copy instead of 4 cents as formerly. Tie Oregonian estimates that it will cost it $18,000 more this year to run than last year. ' ' "While it will not cost the News thousands more this year than last it will cost it hundreds no doubt, if printing material still goes up, or even remains at the present prices, but we do not intend to ensmall, neither do we intend to raise our rates but shall do all in our power to increase our subscription list and business to make the difference in cost. If merchandise comes up the mer chants can raise the price on "their goods, but if printing material goes up people will not stand to have the newspaper rates raised on them, liece the peculiar position newspa pers are now placed in. The Grant County News has ink enough on hand to run it this year, and paper enough to last till July and if prices do not take a fall by then we will either print on oiled satin and hire some man to take it to each subscriber to read or simply buy a new stock of p.rpcr; anything to please our patrons. In view of the extreme prices now in vogue we will after this week do away with a portion of our "complimentary list" and send only to a few that natur ally belong to such a list. "We will also stand linn to our "warning no tice" in another column. If a man don't pay for one year's subscription will he pay for two V "Washington, Feb. 25.
