ONLY rAPER IX GRANT COUN1Y.
Official Pap or For Grant County.
Canyon City, Saturday Jan. 3, 1880.
ft H. Shepherd, Editor.'
-31879-1380.
The year just ended has been joy
ous, as -well as a profitable one to
Grant County, and we hope and be
lieve that the year of 1880 will be
one that Ave may look for as a year in
the history of this county that has
accomplished more good than any of
the preceeding ones.
What has been accomplished in
1879 ? Well, let us see, besides the
uncountable permanent improve
ments, the preliminary survey for a
proposed railroad has been run ; the
mails have been increased to daily;
a quartz mill costing about $80,000
has been erected and put in success
ful operation, at the Monumental
Mine; not a "red skin" has trod the
grass down; crorjs. of all kinds, were
never better; our mines all paid a
handsome yield; many new discov
eries have been made; the county in
debtedness has been diminished con
siderably; and there are scores of
other items that go to prove we have
improved wonderfully as a county
during'the year just passed.
Now what should we strive to do
in 1880 ? Well, there are many im
portant things that we, as an enter
prising people, should try to bring
about, but most of all let double the
amout of good be accomplished in
1880. This vear we have two elec
iions, see that the best men are elec
ted and one grand motive will bo
accomplished; a move is on foot to
gobble a slice of our county, as was
done in 1879, see that that is check
mated. Let all jduII together for the
purpose of securing a factory, in
short let us all try and make the New
Year a crowning one for Grant Coun
ty. We you all a happy New Year.

Weston, Ogn., Dec. 2-lth. On
Tuesday evening, Gen. James H.
Turner, editor of the East Oregoni
an, killed a sheep herder named
Harry Strobe. It appears that W.
L. Black and Strobe had some words
when Strobe struck Black in the
face, whereupon Turner took Black's
place plack. A fight ensued, Tur
ner getting the worst of it. Turner
then went to his room, procured a
dirk knife and sought Strobe, whom
he found in Matlock's saloon. On
seeing him, Turner went up and
pushed Strobe aside, when the lat
ter asked, "What in hell do you
mean?" Turner then stabbed him
through the heart, killing him in
stantly.
General Turner has always borne
the reputation of an honest, upright
man, and talanted lawyer, respected
by every one Strobe was not of a
good character, being addicted to
gambling and other vices.
