Smith and party, says the Lewiston Teller, aro now at work about three milea from Lewiston up the Clerr water river removing obstructions of rock and otherwise preparing the river for steamboat navigation. This will open up that vast section of agricul tural country lying south and east of Lewiston. The Captain, we understand, is meeting with more rapid success than he anticipated in the work of removing these obstructions. The Otter Tail, says the Tacoma Herald, .in engine used on the N. P. 1. B. during the first years of its construc tion west from Duluth, was shipped to the Pacific a few years ago, and placed on the lino of construction between Kalama and Eew Tacoma. Afterward, it was u?ed to great advantage on the Puyallup branch. We now learn that within a few days it will be sent to Ains worth, there to be placed upon the Pen d' Oreille division, from whence it j will work its way to the East. Intimidating Settlers. On the 22d of last month Lariy Dolau, accompanied by five men, left Fort Bidwcll for the purpore of loca ting a tract of line grazing land in Warner Valley. When about twenty- seven miles from Bid well, in Grant County, Oregon, the party was stopprd by B. F. McConnaughy and five or six men with loaded carbines, who ordered the advancing party to turn round and KO back to Bidwell. As neither Mr. Dolan nor any of his party had any arms they concluded they did not care about going into the real estate bnsi ness in that section any way and the7 'lit out' for Bidwell. Cne"of the men in conipaoy with Mr. Dolan, Mr. Tor- ryson, had already filed 1G0 acres of land in Warner "Valley, and wa.s go ing to do the same. Albei t Ilender son, who is in the employ of Mr. Mc Connaughy. has already built a house on Mr. Torryson's claim and Mr. Mc Connaughy has put up a cabin on the land it was the inlentnn of Mr. Dolan to file on. There are about 2000 acres of Government land in that vicinity which Mr. McConnaughy uses for grazing land and which he rashly de eiares no one shall take up. We un derstand it is the irtention of Mr. Do lau to have the parties who so sunimar ily checked his farming scheme arrest ed. Modoc Independent. Does Her Own Work. Does she What of it1? Is it any disgrace? Ls she any less a true woman, less worthy of respect, than sho who sits in fcilks and satins, and is vain of lingers that never labor We listened to this sneer a few days ago, nud the tone in which it was uUered betokened a narrow, ig noble mind, better fitted for any place th in a country whoe institutions rest on honorable lab r as one of the chief ci.rner stone-. It evinced a false idea of the true basis of society, of true womanhood, of genuine nobility. It showvd tho dest.iible spirit of caste, of rank, which a certain class are trying to establish a caste whose sole founda tion is money, and is the me most kind of rank known to civiization. Exchanire. For the Girls. In marrying a man, make your own match. D not marry a man in order to get rid of him, or to oblige him, or to save him. The who would go to destruction without you, will quite as likely go with you, and perhaps drag you aloug. Don't ,,,i,rry iu hasle lest yu rcPeufc nt lei" sure. Do not marry for a home and a living. Do not let aunts, fathers, or mother sell you for money nr position, into bondage which you could not re deem with tears and lifelong misery. Place not yourself habitually in the hands of a suitor, until you decide the question of marriage. Woman's will is weak; people often become bewilder ed and do not know their error until it is too late to get away from their influ ences; settle your heads aud make up your minds alone. Do not trust your happiness iu the keeping of one who has no heart. Shun the man who gets intoxicated. Do not rush thoughtless ly into wedded life, contrary to the coo sent of friends. Love and wait. Oregon's Diploma. The diploma awarded the State of Oregon for her ag ricultural display at the Paris Exposi tion, has just been framed and will be taken to Salem and placed In the Cap itol. Ours is the only State that re ceived a diploma, tho United States only receiving one for a general display of agricultural products. But Oregon was especially honored, inasmuch as she made the finest agricultural oxhibit from America. Standard. The Idaho Democrat says, Wilson, I superior, rather than by efforts at foro Walch and Davis, three of the Schwa- j ing up prices for articles of an ordinary bacher safe robbers, who were confined in the county jail awaiting the meeting of the Grand Jury, made their escape last night by sawing through the floor of the jail and diguing out under the wall at tins back end of the jaii. They reuse have had some kind of a saw or other sharp instrument with which they cut through the floor, which was constructed of hewn timbers, eight inches thick, placed side by side. All the dirt dug out was on the idside of the building A sharp stick which they had used in digging, was found on the outside, near the hole through which they made their exit. There is no evidence that they had help from the outside, except the fact they must have procured the instrument witli which the floor was cut from seme outside source. Fifty-one days have elapsed since the young woman, Mary Francis Culling fell into a trance at St. Vincent's Hos pital, and she still remains in about the same condition, lying on her bed perfect ly unconscious of everything, and to all appearances more like one dead than alive. A few days ago ah electric bat tery was brought into requisition by the physician", and on its application the muscles contract, and when the galvan ic cords are brought near the face the patient appears to understand what is being done, aud cringes upon the appli cation. Her husband is a constant at tendant at. her bedside, and with the untiring sisters of the hospital, doall in their power to promote the comfort of the patient. The case presents may remarkable feature and Dr. Jones, who is attending the woman, is unable to sirietly define, the direct cause of her prolonged sleep. It is impossible to tell how long she will remain in her present condition. During the entire time, the only nourishment she has par taken is thickened soup, forced down her throat with a spoon. Standard. Iven'o, Nov., Nov. 17. A respecta ble citizen, named S. M. Oakes, was killed last night at 10 o'clock, by Mrs. Dr. T. jN". Snow. The man was very deaf, and called to get the dector, who was away, to go to see his children. Mrs. Snow could not tell H-ho it was and called out to him, but he, failing to hear, did not answer. He walked up and down the porch for half an hour, stopping to rattle at the door as he passed it. Mr. Snow kept calling and her three children crying from J'c'ir ex cited her more. She said at last in as loud ; voice as she could: "Go away or I will shoot through the door." He paid no attention and she shot, striking him in the breast. He stepped out in the street aud fell down, dying almost immediately. The oemmunity olamed Mrs. Snow but very little. Oakes was a large property holder. He left a wife. Sheep Husbandry. Shcap husband ry possessos more interest for tho aver age citizen not immediately engaged in it than does any other branch of live stock culture. This for the reason that tho question of both food and rai ment enter into its consideration. Men eat mutton from choice, while they weai woolen clothes from necessity. The double demand thus made upon the products of the flock bring its economic al culture and thrift home to the fireside of every household. These demand wool and mutton of good quality, at i low prices, and need not be expected j long to remain passive under a condi tion of the market not in accordance with their desire--. The successful flock-masters of the future are to be those who appreciate these facts, and adjust their business accordingly. The raaxium amount of meat and fibre will be secured for tho outlay of labor and provender, by bestowing these only up on animals best adapted to bring the highest returns therefor. Money will be made by furnishing the purchaser a ; or lower grade. The little economies will be looked after with a vigilant eye, and unnecessary expenses lopped oil ' with an unsparing band. In the more rigoerous localities, stock will be warm ed externally by comfortable shelter, rather than enternally by food which should go to the building up of meet and fibre. Constant improvement, through the employment of better blood, will be looked after in short, all the Accessories to profit will be made to con tribute to the income of the flock-maa-ter who hereafter successfully competes of the highest profits in the future aa now seen before him.
