" ( 18 ffnt County fte ONLY I'Al'lltt IX CHANT CoL'NMV. Official Paper Tor Grant County dm you City, Saturday Nov. 15, 1X70. hniani ii n i nun iiimnjii hi mm. i i i '"J H. Shkpiikki), Editor. Tin: Indians and some crson, name not ment'ou'd, had a pow-wowat Win IlCIzi ucca, on the 1th in?t, in which a munser of Indians, natives of Califor nia, NovaJa ami other places, took part tJUid expressed a a desire not to to Malheur Reservation. Msfc of the Piute?, including old AYinnemuccji, seemed to be willing to return provided Lectins and 3 ee were snt back fn.m the Yakima. Now, va are of the opin ion, judging from the tonco! the report of the povv-wow, that the people of Nevada, arc very anxious to retain the Indians in that section, as roving citi izens for per.-onal gain or otherwise, and that the Indians arc misinformed in regard to many things. We know nothing about how they fared while at the Agency except what we hear from parties who prctecd to know, and they say that, the Indians were well fed and well cared for. One thing certain sup plies were plenty and they got them. It is a well known fact that there is now an abundance of provision, Hour, blank et, etc , etc., at the Agency and thou sands of pounds on the road there. Now, if the Government does not in tent! to put the Indians on the Reserve why in the name of all that is good do they continually send supplies here. To tell the truth there is a "nigger in the wood pile" some place and the Gov ernment officials know how he got there, and what he is there for. It is a dose secret. It appears bad to be parleying with a band of rovinii red devils the way these Piutes have been dealt with for the last year and the sooner the authorities put them on the Reserva tion, or throw the land open for settle ment, the better it will be for all par ties concerned. We believe it is the intention of the government to make the Malheur a very large Reservation, else they would surely shut oil supplies soon. Mi. A. Ntdtner, of the Portland Standard, gives a glowing deseiiption of his visit to Eastern Orcsron. Rut we hope ho will be able to get to Grant County next time and see the finest county in thi part of the State. The Oregon ian should send a man up into the John Day valley t seethe people and country, as the weekly has a very large list of subscribers here. Come up, Rro. Scott ! We take the following from the Standard: "A Ghkat Emimiu: No one can re alize the magnitude and extent of the agricultural rescourecs of Eastern Oregon and Washinnton Territory from the reports published in the papers. In fact, the imagination can hardly conceive the fact that a section of country, which, four or five years ago was regarded as only lit for stock rais ing, to-day with less than a population of fifty thousand souls, exports from sixty to seventy thousand tons of wheat. This section of the great Northwest has developed much faster than any part of the Pacific Coast, and the extent of its productive capacity is scarcely known. There is sufficient territory to support a population of live millions- There is aii empire belonging to Oregon and Washington Territory, east of the mountains, which, -within five 3'ears will furnish more wheat for export than to day goes out of the Golden Gate in California. Another year will do more to develop Eastern Oregon and Wash ington than the past ten, and shippers will keep up -with the demands of the producers." ..- FM. W. ChiUls & Co., of Happy Camp, Jackson county, cleaned up 68,000 last week after a run of H days. A man named Dodson has been ar rested by Sheriff Hall, of Polk county, on a charge of horse stealing.
