Tlio Ml Conntr Ms. czz ONLY PAPER IK GRANT COUN'lT. Official Paper For Grant County. Cm yon City, Saturday Ocr. 4, 1879. S. n. Shepherd, Editor. OUR AGENTS. L. P. Fisher, San Francisco, Cal. Win. L. Eppinger, Portland, Ogn. Ed. L. Herriff, Walla Walla, W. T. Geo. H. Tracy, Baker City, Ogn. John. L. Miller, Monument, Ogn. Jules Le Brette, Prairie Cifcv, Ogn. Geo. P. Rowell & Co., N. Y. City. - -o e A FACTORY. v We have often thought and wonder, ed why s'me man that had capital, : nd wanted to invest so that he might in a few yrare double the amount invested. Put a few thousand dollars into a wool rn factory iu this valley somewhere He could, no doubt, pet bonus enough from our sheep men, farmers and busi ness men t almost build his factory: and now that this county w petting to be so well settled and tho sheep inter est is so great that it would take but a few years for tho owner of such an en terpriso to more than double his capital invested. There is no factory in East em Oregon and our sheep men and farmers have to send their wool to Port land or San Francisco to sell and then it is manufactun-d into wearing apparel there and reshipped to this point of the state and resold to the same men. A woolen factory in this valley would ob viate much of this extra expense. 0-e man in this vicinity sold his wool re cently to a firm in San Francisco through comini-simi men and when hey got his returns he found that with com mission, freight, storage, cartage, wharfdge, shrinkage, stealage, decrease in price, and expenses in sending mon ey etc. etc., he had paid out on his lot of wool over 400. Now how many such transactions like the above would it take to put money enough into some man's pocket to build a go id fac'ory in John Day valley, when no better water power is to be found. The above man, and there are dozens of other;- thnt have fared the sam, could if asked to-morrow, to u hscribe stock to an enterprise as uc speak of well afford to tike as much as two third! the amount they p id to some commission firms to sell their wool in stock, thus keeping the money in Grant County that now goes to othtr States. Buyers would then c me in and pay you the caRh at your door and sack your wool and take it off your hands without, all the above mentioned "leakages" to be deducted from your sales. Two grist mills are now established in the valley and both are doing well, and why? because men arc operation them who are sober, industrious, good busines men. They havo built up a good business and are now wealthy, be cuse the grain was grown here and had to be ground and they had enterprise enough and were not afraid to put their shoulders to the wh el and thn wheel rolled and they stoo I by and kept it clean. The same, or better, opening now awaits some man in Joi n Day valley. Be wise and come on. A Stabbing Affkay. Fred Miller, who fat ms a few miles below here on thn river, wei.t to stop a Chinaman, Ah Toy, fiom digging a ditch through his field and the Chinaman said he. was only fishing. Fred took his net from him and threw ic away, whereon the almond eyed celestial drew his knife and stabbed Miller once in the car, in the ueck and in the back inflicting three very bad wounds. The case was given a preliminary examination before Judge. Dustin on Thursday and the Chinatmn wa bound over in the sum of 81,500; failing to u"e '-onds he was placed in jail to await the action of the grand jury at the next term of court. Weore, one of the gentlemen engaged in shipping cattle by rail from bete to Iowa, is in town. He inf. rms t.s that, shipping cattle Eit is an experiment that may or may nor. prove proGtable. Nevada cattle are sought brcnu.'e tby are more tractable for feeders than the lonjr horned Texas cattle. Of the 500 head shipped from here a month ago, not one died on the way. Tho cattle, are talon to Iowa wlre thpy are fed about 100 bushels of corn each. This, which can be purchased at. frmi 12$ to 15cent.- a bushel, adds from 300 to 400 pounds to the weight of each, and makes prime beef. When fatted on corn, they are shipped to Chicago and slaughtered. The cattle, njnn their arrival in Io;, are sometimes distributed in lots of from ! 20 to 50 or 100 head among farmers who j feed them corn until they are in a, mar- I kctable condition. This arrangement j is of preat advantage to the farm. r 1 vrho are paid a stipu.atod price per ! pound for tho increase in the weight of! the cattle while they feed them, and en. I ables them to realize from 20 Jo j da catfle arc not so wild as Texas steers, and consequently jiain flesh quicker, and shot: Id the experiment of shipping hMii East prove successful, it will be canied on exten-ively in the future.
