A Typo on the Road;
Editor News: We too have ta
ken a trip, but our journey lay in the
direction of the land of "big red tipples
and pretty girls." Early Saturday morn
ing we climbed into the buckboard,
' hnving previously paid $25 for the
, privilege of being carried over the
1 rocks between Canyon City and the
Dalles. We had anticipated a hard,
dusty ride, but the driver comforted us
! with the assurance that two ladies would
i
soon be added to our load. Our driver
j seemed to be given to exaggeration as
to the number of the ladies, but one
did pet on at Mr. Stone's. Talk about
your doctors for seat partners! We
had intended to tell all about the crops,
etc., but really had'nt time to notice
such thiiurs, for wo had something fair
than even the beautiful valley of the
John Day. About noon we arrive at
the S 'Uth Fork and stop inv dinner at
Eli Lester's. A threshing machine
was buisily engaged in cleaning up the
Captain's large crop! A few miles fur
ther on we bogin the ascent of the
mountain h ading id Spanish Gulch, ar
riving there late in the afternoon.
The town was quiet, and Are stopped
only long enough to change the mail
About 0 o'clock P. M. we arrive at our
stopping place for the night. A few
hours in drcairland, and wo are up and
start on ot:r way. A short drive
through the bracinir mountain air brings
us to the summit and we cross over
in to Wa?co and dash down Twin Uulch. j
Hero a sad misfortune befell us, our
fair companion leaving the stage. Im-
mediately the roads femed ti become j
du-ty and roui:h. We had, however,
more leisure to look at the country.;

Lumber. It is astonishing fo see
the amount of lumber that goes through
this city to the valley from W. S.
Southworth's mill. See his advertise
ment. It shows that the valley is im
proming very rapidly or so much lum
ber would not be used down there.
