Ui lino your parlor an pick
ing up a mantel ornament, or
a tidy, and saying, "Can I take
this for a few day? I will bring
it back again.77 But they fre
quently do so with books.
Now, books are as much the
furniture of a room as anything
else, particulary when they are
in a parlor. They are put
there to be looked over and
promote conversation, and if
they are carried off their pur
poses are defeated. Besides,
borrowers feci much less obli
gation to return books than
anything else. Very few per
sons keep m-re than ten or fif
teen volumes on a parlor table,
and though one mav not be
missed for a time, yet if eveiy
body who came in would appro
priate one, the owner would
soon be destitute of books.

An English journal frankly
gives credit to American ge
nius for at least fifteen Inven
tions and discoveries which it
says have been adopted the
world over. These triumphs of
American genius are thus enu
merated: First, the cotton gin:
second, the planing machine;
third, the grass mower and
grain reaper; fourth, the rotary
printing press; fifth, naviga
tion by steam: sixth, hot air or
caloric engine: seventh, the
sewing machine; eighth, the In
dia rubber industry; ninth, the
machine for manufacturing
horse shoes; tenth, the band
blast for carving; eleventh, the
gauge lathe; twelfth, the grain
elevator; thirteenth, artificial
ice manufacture on a large scrle;
afourtee th, the elect ro-magne
and its practical xpplication;
fifteenth, the composing ma
chine for print rs.
The n mount of outstanding
$1 and 2 legal tender notes i
now in circulation has been re-
duced to tlie very low sum of
$20,000,000. In 1S77 the
amount in circulation was $45,- i
000,000. and the cause of this i
large reduction is said to be
the ruling of the Treasury De
partment compelling banks ur
individuals wanting these small
bills to pay express charges.
The Indicator thinks a great
revolution in the sugar trade
may be expected from the dis
covery that this lucious article
can be made from maize and
sorghum and sold for two or
three cents per pound. The
United States imports $100,
0U0.000 of sugar annually, so
the new discovery is a matter
of consideral importance.
