ONLY PAPER IN GRANT COLW'J.Y.
Official Paper For Grant County.
(Jinjon City, Saturday Aug. 1G. 1S79.
8. H. Shepherd, Editor.
The Grant County Dish Ra is pa
ired by a notorious leech they eall S.
TL Shepherd; lie is the get of some old
drab imported years ag, who never
could, with all her filth, raise enough
lo t:ike her out of peonage. Of the
thousands who might have been no
man ever claimed him for his son.
Wnlla "Walla State-man.
The Editor nf the Walla "Walla
8 tat'?! tan, mad ben use we trot the
best of him on "ink flowing." in hi
hist is?U' calls us names that no man
has ever called us to our face. Now,
understand that our mother, a Chris
tian ladv whom wo loved dearlv, died
nearly ten years ago in Ivh, and ou,r
father, Col. James Shepherd, now at
Kaker City, and the oldest editor in the
United States, being now over 79 years
of ac, cannot bo referred to by the
editor of the Walla Walla Statesman,
or any other editor, if there be any so
low, as he has done, without a personal
reproach from us. Mr. Parker, you
can say what yon please about us or
our paper, but remember now and for
ever that yu cannot blackguard our
family. In speaking as you have in
the above will only show to the people,
who do not now know you, what you
are, and also injures Mr?. Newel's pi
per to an alarming extent you cannot
be injured, you mv too low. This is
the t:ne we notice ymi in our paper.
Change It. Our xchanges will
please cl nri g the nam-- of the Times of
Grant, county t tin G itANT County
News, as it nivfs us inconvenience
often for the reason that no such paper
exists as the Grant County Times
Also remember that J. M. Shepherd,
of the Bedrock Democrat, is our
brother and not our father. The la
mented Delazon Smith, "the lion of
Linn," was also a brother-in-law of
ours.

The Grant County News published
at Canyon City by Mr. S. II. Shepherd
is doing much to advertise the resources
of that rich section of Eastern Orego..

Enterprise. Judge M. L. Olm
sted, who by the way i-; imbued with a
full hare of public enterprise, took up
on himself the duty to enlarge nur lift
of subscribers and as the Jesuit of his
labiT handed to us quite a list last
Sunday. The papers will all he sent
as directed, and we, with the people,
thank the Judge for his earnestness in
the matter. Mr. Olmsted did the. so
liciting for the love he. has for the coun
ty.
At Home. We have often thought
that if any couple deserved a nice home
it w Mr. and Mrs. Philips, of this
city. . And if one oe.s up to their
beautiful home and for a few hours leis
urely wn'k "ver th pl.-ie and see the
tre !itenllv vidrd !)"ii t 'he
' H'd wih the turcst ipph-,
peats a p'unis, be-ido5 every vurioty
c1' small fruit in abundance, and then
o down t.i the house and have a talk
with the manpie, who is ever ready to
coverie with you and that in a clear,
plain tone that any child can tinder
stand, you will unite with ii in saying
that they really have a fine home.
The bird will invite yon to "come in,"
in as plain words a.i you can speak
yourself, and will then onW into a
conversation with perfect ease and
without lack of words. It is a irulv
wonderful bird. Again wrt siv that
with the fin fruir. beautiful home and
-their numerous pet", Mr. and Mrs.
Philips have the place they so richly
deserve and are at home.

FUTURE PROSPECTS.
Our investigation of the reports from
the Granite Creek district are very en-
i couraging, and confirm our previous
assertions that Grant county will in a
few years bo the best mineral produ
cing xuinty on the coast. Veins of ore
are being struck every day in the Mn-
! unieiital and other mines as have never
b.en found before except on the Com-
stork. We have ? n abiding faith in
DrMnitP dUfri fW.i ...inn ihpv.vimu
reports that we have received from
men whose judgment we can rely- upon,
ana we extend to the parties interest
ed in that distsict our best wishes for
the fulfillment of their most, sanguine
expectations. As the most of them are
our immediate citizens their piosperity
adds smother factor to the prosperity of
our invitiiiLr county. Every new ledire
discovered, and every pound of ore ex
tracted in this county brings its advan
tages to our already prosperous towns
and county, and nsiead of living in an
out-of-the-wav place we will soon be
come the center of a graid thorough
fare, with our daily line of coaches filled
with passenger, and heavily loaded
teams passing ami repassing on their
way to these lieh camps.
We arc already larijelv benefitted bv
the. camps now in operation .'Mid anv
new development adds In our com
merce and biings the circulating mcdi
urn among us, to benefit the store-keeper,
hotel-keeper, saloon-keeper, stage
lines and every t ther agent depending
upon new developments in mines or ag
riculture.
