As we paccd through John Day town we noticed that the town was improving iu the wiiv of new building?, and also that the mines in that vicinity are he ing worked with increased interest. Afr a few hour's drive we left the rrtage road about eighteen miles from tbis place and began the ascent of the mountain. We traveled up a canyon foi s veral miles and then a few hills were traversed and we had reached the summit of the mountain, and such a road as it is to travel over makes one glad when they have reached tha sum mit. We descended the grade and shout one o'clock halted on a little stream near MeClure's sheep ranch, on the edge of Kx Yol'ey, wh re we fed Mir ieain and p;:rtook of a cold lunch. Mr. DcGarm who has taken oil about 200 tons, has had a chemical analysis of it made, and it proves to be considerably purer than the host Kilt of commerce. Mr. Loftus brought us a sample which is very clean aud pretty, appearing very much like opaque crystalized quartz. The salt is covered with a layer of ulkali but a few inches thick. The above salt bed is supposed to be in tyrant county and is about 100 miles from tie Monumental Mine. "Would it not. be well for the Directors of the Monumental Mining Company to look after this salt bed, as it will he a great advantage to them and will save Would most respectfully an nounce to the Public that they have received a large stock of SPRING & SUMMER goods, and keep constantly on hand a lull line of choice lami- ly Groceries.
