The immediate importance of the decision by the supreme court on the Thurman bill against the Central Pacific Rail road, is that it catches about $4,000,000 net earnings accru ed since the passage of the law, and compels it to pas into the treasurv of the United states as a sinking fund. Had the decis ion been against this law, this sum would have been distribut ed as dividends among the stock-holders. Hereafter, un less some weak or corrupt con gress shall repjal the law, the public will have the satisfaction of knowing that the railway companies are at least making some provision for the payment of the principal and interest of their debt to the government, though that has never been the purpose and intention of the companies.
