try, is preparing to transfer its Pa
cific shipping headquarters from Van
couver, II. C, to Seattle on account
of the opposition shown toward the

comes the announcement from Van
couver that an English corporation is
reparing to enter the field in oppoi-
ion to the New England Fish Comp
any. It is reported that Sylvester

ton president of the Equitable Life
Assurance Society, saved $250 yester
day by promising to serve on the
October jury in the city court. Just
before he sailed for Europe recently,
a subpoena was made out for him
and one of his secretaries ignored the
notice. Yesterday after his return
from abroad, Mr. Morton hastened to
the court and explained matters. Upon
his promising to serve for two weeks
at $1.50 a day as a petit juror, the fihe
against him was remitted.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
that the Common Council of the
City of Astoria, has declared its de
establish the grade on 51st street
from the south line of Birch street to
the north line of Date street, so that
the grade when so reestablished will be
at the following elevations above the
base of grades as established by Ordi
nance No. 71 of the City of Astoria,
to-wit:
At the south line of Birch street at
an elevation of 30 feet above the base
of grades; at the north and also the
south line of Cedar street at an eleva
tion or 49 feet 'above the base of
grades; at the north line of Date
street at an elevation of 100 feet
above the base of grades; that be
tween the points above designated
the grade shall be upon an even and
gradual slope.
