PARIS PATTERN No. 1974.
All Seam Allowed.
Tie bretelle on the shoulders of this little one-piece dress afford an
especial expression of the season's styles- Of course, if preferred, the bre

be wise not to. do so. Three backward-turning tucks are laid in the shoul

are attached under the middle one. The sleeve is full length and is finished
with a backward-turning cuff that is trimmed with the embroidery inser
tion: There is a stitched belt fastened with a button. The pattern is in
four sizes 1 to 7 years. For a child of 5 years the dress requires 3 1-4
yards of material 27 inches wide, 2 3-1 yards 36 inches wide or 2 3-8 yards
42 inches wide, with 2 S-S yards of insertion to trim Price of pattern, 10c.
GREAT SPECIAL OFFER
BETTING ON THE RACES
AT BELMONT
INTERESTING ISSUES ARISING
FORM NEW YORK'S STRIN
GENT LAWS.
NEW YORK. May IS-Relieving
that gambling at the race tracks will
be as flagrant this summer as before
the passage of the anti betting law.
District Attorney Clarke and his as
sistant. Robert 11. Elder of Brooklyn
Kings County announced last night
that they would immediately apply
to the Court of Appeals, the highest
courts in the stale for a final inter
position of the recent statue. Gamb
ling on the races was found by de
tectives to be open to all who could
identify themselves at Belmont Park
Thursday. The officials of Kings
County, in which are located the
Sheepshead Bay and other important
tracks, were led by this condition -o
believe that oral book-making would
flourish despite the law.
"The contention of the law," satd
Mr. Elder, speaking of the Gaynar
decision, "was that to lay 'odds' orally
for the purpose of getting bets, is
bookmaking. The courts holds that
there must be writing of some sort,
but it does not specify whether the
writing must be of 'odds' or whit.
It leave, thus, the real point of the
case undecided. We are trying to
find out if it were necessary to record
the 'odds' to make the act bookmak
ing. "If this decision stands there is fear
that the anti-gambling provision of
the constitution will be nullified. If
gambling is not a crime without
writing or recording, then the book
makers can shout the 'odds', and make
oral bets at will. This would enable
them to do business on a very large
scale.-
"The indications at the Belmont
Park track tend to confirm this fear.
I understand that Mr. Belmont was
asked to stop this. The fact that hi
did not shows that the gamblers are
to take advantage of the decision of
the court to the utmost.
1 "The friends 'of order tell me that
they have "not lost faith in the Court
of Appeals, however. The racing
men have organized a press bureau
to try to manufacture a public senti
ment I do not think, however, that
the people can be fooled. The real
enemy of liberty is the man who
would substitute his own way for the
way of the law."
