This is a statement made by the Di rector of the Survey, written in an swer to an inquiry as to whether one D. P. Coble has been authorized to hire assistants for Alaskan service and to require a deposit of $65 from each as a guaranty that he would stay with the work throughout the season. The name of ihe United States Gov ernment is occasionally used to ob tain money under false pretenses, but the I-ederal ramification is so exten sive and interrelated that the risk of n C 1 I ,ions arc usua,1y short-lived, as in this case. Ihe offender, Coble, came to Oakland, Cal., from Vancouver, B C, with his unique scheme for obtain ing money from young men who would be attracted by an offer of a good position and a trip to Alaska. His plans were rather carefully laid. He hired an office at Oakland, forged j letters of authorization in ' Director I Smith's name, had letterheads and j blanks printed, and even engaged steamship berths to Alaska to lend i color to the scheme. Thirty men an swered his newspaper advertisement for Geological Survey assistants to go to .the Territory at "$60 a month and found," but unfortunately for him, one of the thirty was an astute mem ber of the Oakland detective force. Coble was all ready to receive the deposits when the Oakland authorities interfered. They had telegraphed to the office of the Survey in San Fran cisco and to the Director at Wash ington, and as a result of the informa tion received, Mr. Coble was trans ferred to the city jail,, where he is, at present awaiting the action of the Federal grand jury and is facing a probable sentence of $1,000 fine or three years' imprisonment or both. His arrest wis more timely, as it ap peared that on the following day he would have collected the money and departed for Mexico. MOSES FIRST STRIKER. CHICAGO, May ia-"Moses cal led the first strike in the brickyards of Egypt and Aaron was the first business agent. It was a success. Nine times out of ten strikes are justifiable." This bibical origin of modern trades union methods was given by James W. Kline, general president of the International Broth erhood of Blacksmith and Helpers in the Western Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. He praised the Methodist church for the recognition j of the trades union and criticized for i upholding the man who desired to re-, main outside of the union." I "The church must get off the fence" he said. "If unions are good for some ' wage earners they are good for all."
