The public, of course, did not know this, had no business to know, and did not care to know it; but it was so nevertheless. To this extent, Mr. Hanlin has been the beneficiary of a generous gratuity; the which he sought to reciprocate by granting from four to six free- passes distributed among the people of this office. Both these concessions are common enough in the theatrical and newspaper spheres, and are not really reckoned as business details; fat titer invariably figure as adjuncts, accepted, understood, admissable an.l entirely equitable. Free lumber he said, would stimu late the development of Canadian provinces and be a detriment to busi ness interests of this country. Mr- Piles declared that practically th only persons seeking a lumber tariff reduction are American owners of timber in Canada and he presented an appeal from the Washington forest fire Association against any reduction He exhibited an original proposed contract of sale that Canadian lumber men had submitted to American con sumers, in which they stipulate that one half of the reduction in duty shall be paid to them.
