SUNDAY, MAY 1 1909. TIIE MORNING ASTOItl AN, ASTORIA, OnEOON. The Daily Market Report PORTLAND, May l-Salmon full ing on th Columbia River began it noon today, and as a result ol tin lo1 Itaga of the water the fishermen op tratlng seines on the lower river fo, , tb time have by far the best of the situation. The Tower the water thi mora favorable are condition for (lie nrlncrs nhl there it little doubt that they will take advantage of their opportunity. The wheelmen on the upper atretchea of the atream, on the other hand, are at a aerloua disadvantage, for it is reported that the water hai fallen to t point where little or noth ing tan be done with mot of the wbeela. On the upper river there are two wheela 16 constructed aa to opet ite on low water, one at Celilo and another at The Dalles, but there are few If any other that can cope with the present altuatlon. v n 1 1 ; It la not often that the water In the Columbia la ao low aa now. at thi time of the year, and fish men say conditions ara ao favorable for the seiners that they ara In position al most to clean out their portion of the atream, ,Thf finhermen generally started operation with the opening of the Demon at noon, but aince under the new law forbidding fulling from o o'clock Saturday evening to 6 o'clock Sunday evening thera were but a few hour for work today, many of them decided to wait until Monday. Bit enough of them tpent the afternoon pulling in thrir seines to make a good supply of salmon for the tanner, ttorage operator and the freh fih trade the first of the week a cer tainty. The announcement wa made today that the price to be paid the fisher men thi eaon will be 7 tent a pound for fih over 25 pound in weight and 5 cent for fih under that weight. A yet It is impossible to ay any thing definite regarding the-ilae of the catch for the eaon. Uually the . output it light at the outlet and thi i likely to be the cae thi year, for thought conditions are favorable en ' the lower river jut now there will J probably be little doing In the upper district until the river reache a high er stage. Then the mutation will be reverted and the wheelmen will have an inning, So far a price of the fresh artid to the trade are concerned, no chann el from present qutstione are expect ed for the next few day. The coure of the market next week will depend upon the aupply. Fish dealer today reported much better catche in the Willamette yesterday and today than earlier In the week. WHOLESALE PRICES.
