To our horror, they led out a poor wretch and our guide told us they were going to cut off his head. We wanted to get out but they would not open the gates until the execution was over. Of course I turned my head away and suffered intense emotions but there were no unusual sounds or outcrey. Atferwards we were told that they had given the victim opium. P. a E., met at their hall in the Odd Fellows' build ing on Tuesday night last, for one of their enjoyable sessions, it was dis covered that the larder for the even ing's refreshment had been amplilied by at least two dozen delicate Angel Cakes. It was taken as one of those pleasant gratuities that fall the way of the Elks. and no particular inquiry was made as to the generous source they hailed from. It was quite sufficient that they were there, and that the boys were there, the two cir cumstance holding but little prom ise for the safety of the dainty edibles. When the time came to approach the tables, the Elk appetite was sharp and appreciative, and the soft snd toothsome, confection were soon dis tributed in scores of hands and lin gered there only long enough to be gratefully lodged where they would make the best impression possible. There was all mannef of praiseful comment passed during . the absorp tion of the Angel Cakes and not a little speculation as to the friendly donor might be, but not enough to interfere with the eating of the lat morsel of the unusual luxury. But in some way peculiarly their own, they will cover the case quite to the satisfaction of the despoiled teachers, as the Elks always do, and the affair will take its place in th: humorous history of the otder in a local way. In the meantime, the hiatus on the luncheon bill of fare will have to be filled with something and the capabl (committee of ladies and gentlemen in charge will see to that TO USE ARMY RIFLES.
