Porter at noon yesterday, in latitude 45:43 N longi tude 128:19 W, with temperature at 53 deg. The wind was N. W. N., sea smooth, with westerly swell prevail ing; bound from Jnneaa to San Fran cisco. At 1:30 o'clock p. m. be caught the sea tag Goliath, with her tow, the Quatsino, off Tatoosh Isl and, and making good time for the Sound. Since she got fixed op lately, the iteamer Genl Washington is making it pretty lively for the Julia B, on the Deep River run and there is mnch fun on the waterfront watching these fine boats make their daily struggle for time and distance against each other. It is said that when the Julia is endowed with her new triple expansion engines, she will turn the time scale around again in a hurry. The little launch Requa, under Captain Leighton, made it out to sea on Friday evening all right, and sped away to the south in fine shape. Captain Leighton expects to make it into San Francisco in 50 hours from bar to bar, which will bring him to the Golden Gate about 8 o'clock to morrow evening, if all goes well. A telegram was received at the Plans have been drawn up by the California & Oregon Coast Steam ship Company for a new boat which it intends to build for operation out of Portland to Coos Bay in conjunc tion with the Alliance. Bids for her construction will soon be let,' and the company expects to . have the job under way within the next month. It will take about five months before she is completed and ready for service- The steamer Lurline was on the dot yesterday afternoon and evening in arriving and departing. She car ried from here as passengers: Frank VaiHe, Mr. and Mrs. B. Veal, G. Sundberg, Captain Hugh McCulloch. of the dredge V. S. Ladd. On or about the first of May next. Captain and Mrs. McCuIly, of the Lurline, in tend starting on a trans-continental trip of several months duration dur ing which they will visit their old homes in Little Rock, Ark, and in Tennessee. The captain, officers and crew of the British bark Donna Francisca were paid off yesterday in full, their articles having expired on Friday last. R. & N. dock, and will not come out until her new owners, the Port of Port land Commission decide on the new port yesterday and passed on up the program for bar and pilotage work, river at once after a load of lumber docks at Tpngue Point, at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and will leave out for Europe on the first available towline. She carries near ly 3,000,000 feet of lumber, and was loaded by Captain Ritchie, for the Brown-McCabe Stevedoring Company. The steamer St Helen's was an other San Francisco craft to enter this port yesterday. She brought nearly 50 tons of freight from the Bay City, which she discharged at the Callender, and then went up stream. The steamer Nome City was among the arrivals in this city yesterday, from. San Francisco. She left 20 tons of local freight on the Callender docks and went on up the river.r The- steamer Jim Butler entered Last evening about 5:30 o'clock, as Mrs. Eli A J. Hustler, one of the oldest and most respected cituens of this city, was attempting to cross Commercial street at the junction of Tenth, she became involved in a con gestion of vehicles, and in trying to avoid an approaching street car, she was confronted by the delivery wag on of the Zapf Furniture & Hard ware Company, whose driver did all in his power to get his horse out of her way, but the animal shied at the car ana the unfortunate lady was thrown to the ground, the wheels of the wagon passing over her right side just below the arm, breaking one of her ribs and bruising her badly. Kindly hands at once tifted her and carried her into the grocery of A. V. Allen & Sons, and a physician was sent for at once, Dr. O. B. Es tes responding. She was taken to her home on Exchange street with out delay, and Dr. J. A. Fulton, her family physician at once made a rigid examination of her wonnds, and found that she had suffered a frac ture of one rib and was in very pre carious condition owing to her ad vanced age and fragile physique. At 9 o'clock she was resting somewhat easier, but was still in much pain and suffering from the shock of the accident. She has al ways been peculiarly well and hearty and this rough visitation comes as a serious blow to her in her 74th year, Mrs- Hustler had made all arrange ments for a visit to California and intended to leave in about two weeks, a pleasure she has been anticipating ever since Christmas. Her number less friends in this city sympathize deeply with her in this untoward trouble and disappointment, and sin cerely hope she will speedily recover and soon be able to take her prom ised outing in the Golden State. No one Is to blame in the unhappy prem ise, save the nervous horse. The steamer M. F. Henderson yes terday brought down two heavy barges and a pile-driver and dredger, for delivery at Fort Stevens. It will be employed on the new construc tion work underway down there. The Engineer's steamer Arago went up the river yesterday with a government barge Portland bound- on her hawsers. The Elmore motor schooner Ger ald C. returned to this port after two months' absence on the lower coast. Captain Tom Latham in charge. She came back from the Siletz with a good load of freight, consigned to S. Elmore & Co. The Russian ship Dundee was to have docked at the Callender bunk ers yesterday, but will not haul in until this morning. The steamship Geo. W. Elder is due in this port from the California coast tomorrow evening. The steamer Argo will be down on Wednesday next bound for Tilla mook with freight and passengers. It is announced that the American barkentine Amaranth is the next square rigger due in this port for lumber. Only seven or eight nurses will be admitted to the school, and as the opportunity is a rare one for any young woman who wishes to become a trained nurse there will naturally be many anxious to take the work up. TAX PARSONAGE CHICAGO, "March 13.-The church parsonage stripped ' in the eyes of the law of its traditional sanctity is slated for taxation this year. This edict, which wilt mean to Cook County an added revenue ap proximating several hundred thous and dollars has gone forth from the county attorney's office. It follows a recent decision of the ' Supreme Court which holds a clergyman's home to be just as taxable as a milk depot or a factory. Notice of Practice March.
