FRIDAY, MARCH S, 19C9. THE MORNING ASTORIAN, ASTORIA, OREGON. The Daily Market Report PORTLAND, March 4.-"There ii probably nut more than half a mil lion bushels of wheat left In first himti In the Inland Empire," said one of the leading grain dealeri of the city today "and the farmers them selves, for iced and feed purposes. will need the bulk of the grain yet untold to carry them to the new crop icaion. "It is doubtful if any wheat crop In the Northwest wan ever before oil) 10 short at this time of tfic year ii now. Stock unsold to date are for the most part odd lots of Indiffer ent wheat that have been more or leia neglected by the buyers, and an indication of the strength of the mar ket Ii the fact that much of this grain, admittedly inferior, Ii selling at good pricei to the millers of the interior. 6mall Receipts From The 8outh. Aside from a car of celery there was little or northing In frpm the South today, and fruit and vegetable supplies generally were - moderate. Asparagus Is down to IS cents a pound, and thecr Is little cauliflower now available at $275 a crate. Head lettuce Is quoted at 75 cent a dozen and fancy tomatoes at $250 a crate. Oranges are down, today's pricei be ing $1.75 to $2.75 a box, and lemons arc quoted at $1.50 to $4,00. Apples are moving steadily at about the same prices as for the past month. Halibut Price la Lowered. Fih dealers report halibut coming more freely than for some time, and the price as a result was lowered to 81 cents a pound today. Small quan tities of salmon caught In the season are still available, but thew will not last long, and the chances are the market will within a short time be practically bare of this fish. The amelt supply was very light, but no change in the price was announced. Egg Market In Good Shape. There were no complaint of inabil ity to move egga on the street today, and the market held about steady at yesterday's price. 24 to 25 cents a doaen for freah ranch offerings. Re celpta for the day were only moder ate, and this Is taken to indicate that considerable shipments are being sent from the country ,j to markets other than Portland. Advance In Sugar Coming. "We look for a lift in sugar prices an day." said a wholesale grocer to day. "In the East the sngar market Is decidedly stif and prices there have been raised.
