Feb. 15.-Karl Eggert, a German shoemaker, 55 years of age. recently arrived here from Oslikosh, Wis., committed suicide in a Pacific avenue hotel about 11 o'clock last night. Eggert had remained in his room all day and refused to allow the door to be opened. While a police man stood on a stcpladder outside, looking through the glass of the tran som, and three others stood near, he shot himself through the temple. In a conversation with the officers before shooting himself, Eggert said his son had a short time ago committed sui cide in San Francisco. He was a wid ower and is believed to have been worth about $20,000 in Oshkosh prop erty. DON'T WANT A TARIFF. CHICAGO. Feb. 15. Protest against the placing of a duty on coffee has been sent to Washington by the roasters and retailers. Congressmen who represent this city have received petitions asking them to use their in fluence to prevent the sub-committee of the ways and means committee re commending a tariff.
