Cherry, Lloyds tgent in this port, in company with Mr. Labbe, the French Consul, of Port land; Mr. Allen, manager for Hind, Rolph & Company, of that city, and Captain Lemeilluer of the French bark Eugene Schneider, of the same owning company as the unfortunate ship Alice now ashore on Washing- ' ton coast, left this city yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, on the launch ' Pilot, Captain Keating, for Ilwtco, f whence they drove with carriage and team to the scene of the wreck, 20 1 miles no the beach, just above Ocean "Park. The spent the major part of " the day there, conferring with Cap tain Aubert and his officers and men, and returned to this city late In the evening. Mr. Cherry says the ship is ' a total loss; that she is burying her self deeper in the sands every hour and Is not susceptible of any sort of redemption even in part The cargo "of cement is ruined and the seas are "running over the hull and smashing things generally and finally.. Consul Labbe has directed the crew of the Alice to remain where they are un til further orders and has made defi nite arrangements with Mrs. Taylor of the hotel at Ocean Park to board them. Captain Vesey, of Lloyd's ar rived down from Portland on last evening's express and will proceed to the ship today and make a survey of her and report; after which she will, in all probability be condemned and sold at auction. And thus the tale of the Alice is quickly told when the annihalitive touch of the solid earth is laid upon her. The steamer Alliance arrived down yesterday morning, about a day late for her, and went on her way Coos ward rejoicing. She has her new ' 'wireless" equipment, and will make good use of it on her schedule runs. She sent her first underway mes sage with it yesterday, just after she crossed the bar, to the Callender Na vigation Company, apprising them of the fact that she was out and bound south. She left here with good busi ness on both decks. Captain Olsen reports the Columbia practically free of impeding ice.. The steamship , Breakwater was one of yesterday's arrivals in this port and after a short docking at the u. k. n, M wi-nt on no the river. She took her whistle with her. Agent Jack" Day, of the Kairim line here, received word from headquar ters yesterday that , the Lurline would take up her Astoria-Portland schedule tndav which is eood news for this man's town always. It thought the O. R. & N. tow ing steamers Harvest yueen ana Ocklahama, will be down today or to? morrow, as the ice is disappearing in the river, and there it plenty of busi ness awaiting them both. The Ger man ship Oregon and the French ship Armen tre both due to come down, en route to foreign ports, besides a bisr schooner now ready at the me tropolis, and the Hinds in this port to go up. ; It is also rumored that by the first of the coming month the iamous old packets, with the bar tug Wallula. will pass to the possession of the Port of Portland Commission, under the new port law and organi zation. - . : v. Elder ar rived in from San Pedro, San Fran cisco and Eureka yesterday morning, and after staying at the Callender dock for a while, she went on up stream, as usuaL The steamshin Senator arrived at the O." R. eV N. piers at 11" o'clock yesterday morning, from the Bay City. She was carrying well on all decks, and tarried here the better part of an hour before going on up the river. ; The steamer South Bay is due to arrive at the Callender dock this morning from San Francisco, and will go hence up the river, probably , to Portland. The steamer St Helen's is due to arrive here from the Bay City today and will continue her voyage up the Columbia and the Willamette to Portland. The French bark Armen, gram laden for the Orient, is the next ship T. L. Fraser. arrived Wednesday from Cedar River on the Nasel where he has been rafting logs, to spend a few days with his family in this city. Marion Smart who has been work ing in South Bend for the past month was a visitor to Ilwaco, this week. Miss Buelah Slingerknd, of Qyster- ville Wn. was a visitor to Ilwaco Wednesday. She states that her fath er, S. S Slingerland, is in Portland, in hospital, and not expected to live. Jim Hall of this city, injured him self quite seriously. Wednesday morn ing, by a hard fall on the ice covered sidewalk in front of H. B. Woodruffs confectionary store on Main Street. He was taken to his room, and it re. ceiving the best of medical attention, and he doubtless will be able to be up, in ' very few days. " v ' Mr. Taylor, a member of the Life Saving' crew, "t Cape Dissappoint ment, was a visitor to Ocean Park Wednesday, where he spent the day with his mother and father. Nelse Hughes and family left Tues day for their borne in British Colum bia, after spending a month or two with relatives in this city. . Miss Eleanore Williams, left Thurs- day,for Portland to spend a few weeks with friends. Dorsey B. Smith, returned to Port land Friday, after a short visit in this city. "' Dan Lvnn. who has chartre of a loERinir camp on the Nasel, was t visitor to our city, the latter part of the week. The news of the wreck ol French bark, 'Alice" was received Fri day morning a few minutes before the north bound train pulled du't, at 9:25, thus enabling many persons from Ilwaco to be on the scene very early. Thcv report this large steel vessel. about the size of the "Glenmorag" wrecked on this beach several years ago, just a little beyond where the "Alice" was wrecked. The crew ex perienced no trouble in getting ashore and did not require the service of the Life Saving Crew. Some think that the vessel will be a -total loss, but nevertheless the cargo of 200,000 pounds of cement, doubtless will be saved, and possibly the ship. Daniel Markham, returned Friday afternoon from Lebam Wn., where he has been' visiting ' his son, Sol, "Markham and family for several days. The first annual clearance sale, at Peterson&Co's dry goods store on The steamer Homer should tie up at the Callender dock sometime this morning, with a goodly manifest of local freight 1 The schooner Virginia went hence to Knappton yesterday morning on the hawsers of the Callender tug Jor dan, and will load lumber at the Co lumbia mills', for San Francisco de livery. The fine four-masted schooner Robert R. Hinds crossed in from San Francisco yesterday morning, and will leave up for Portland on the first tow line that offers. She will load out lumber for the California coast. The steamer Argo left this port yesterday , morning for Portland, where she will load today and-return ,tnwn tr.nicrht. outward bound for Tillamook Bay points. At 9 o'clock last evening he picked up the Standard Oil barge No. 3, in tow of the steamer Golish, then off Eureka( bound for Portland, with a cargo of oil. Main Street, began Friday, tnd will continue for fifteen days. Their large stock of men's, women's and children's furnishings of all descrip tions are being told at a discount of from 20 to 35 per cent, and atl persons in and around Ilwaco, will, tt the re duced prices, doubtless, lay in a sup ply for future needs. Samuel P. Haaw of the North Head Wireless Station was a visitor to Il waco Friday.i ',., The excursion train, which left at 9:25 A. M. Saturday, for Ocean Park, to the wreck of the "Alice," had about fifty passengers, all returning on the regular south bound train at 2:10P.M. Mrs. Dave Ilerrold, returned to Il waco Saturday after an absence of over a year, spent on their farm, near Oswego, Ore. . Her husband who ar rived about two weeks ago, hat been very busy getting everything in readi ness, for the commit of i hit wife. Their many friends here extend them the glad hand of welcome, hoping that they have returned to stay. The fine new hunting boat the Hazel" belonging to Fredrick Walk er, broke loose from its moorings on the night of the storm, and the next morning was found on the Ilwaco beach, pretty badly broken up, and it said to be a total wreck. Mrs. Ella -Parks, left Saturday morning for South Bend, Wash., to spend a short time. Mrs. A. L. Meyers, returned re cently from visit with her son.Frank Eckert and wife of Seattle. Rev. Holladay and family arrived the latter part of this week, and will make Ilwaco their home for awhile, Mr. Holloday will have charge of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the bal ance of thit year. ...
