A GREAT DISCOVERY.
STANFORD UNIVERSITY, Cal.,
Dec. 28. A discovery which will have
great Important results in the world
of science was made public today bv
Professor "George Hemp, of Stanford,
In a course of a lecture before ' the
Stanofrd Phylology Association. The

The Daily Market Report
PORTLAND, eDc. 28,-Whethcr
tha onion growers of this state will
markclkthclr.orop this season In the
usual way, the individual producers
acting for themselves, or dispose of
the product as a whole through an
agent, or agents, appointed by the
federated growers, may b decided
today. '
Representatives of tho Federated
Onion Growers Association from all
districts where this crop is grown in
a commercial way have arranged to
meet lit this city this afternoon, at the
office of President Fsnno of the as
sociation, to discuss the matter from
alt points of view and take final ac
tion on the schema proposed for the
disposition of the 1908 crop.
"There is no poultry market today,"
was the comment of Front-street
dealer. "The turkeys ara gone, and
the demand also. Wt still have
plenty of chickens, ducks and geese,
but the retailers are not In the mar
ket to buy stuff that would have to be
carried over to Monday, so there is
nothing doing. For the time, I can
sec nothing to warrant any changes
from the last quotations on any line."
Oregon ranch eggs were quoted at
40 to 421 cents on the street today,
but In some quarters weakness was
reported and some dealers held that
it would bs difficult to move even the
moderate stocks on hand at better
than 40 cents. Easterns still comprise
the bulk of the supply.
