neither beast, fish nor fowl. They eat
fish eggs or caviare, but draw the line
there. Their principal diet for the for
ty days' fasting hi made up of olives,
beans, caviare bread and crackers.
But at 0 o'clock on the morning of
Christmas day, Jan. ?, the Jullanist
fast is over. It Is not necessary to
hint that tliene people count the days
till Christmas or that they rejoice and
are exceeding glad when the anniver
sary arrives. These facts are obvious.
Christmas means for them a glorious
feast, a square meal, several square
meals In fact, a round of square meals.
Our Jullanist friends go to church
early on their Christmas morning, but
not too early, They eat breakfast
first. High mass is celebrated in the
Greek Orthodox church at 8 o'clock.
The forty days' fast having ended two
hours before, the Julianlsts are Joy
fully full of the good things of this

The electric lights all over the city
were out (or quite a while early this
morning. After some delay they
were finally turned on.
STOCKING TEN FEET LONO.
NEW YORK, Dec. 23. -Christmas
stockings ten feet lung and made of
canvas will be hung from the loweit
points on .the new Qurrniiboro bridge
which spans the East River on Christ
mas morning by members of the
Queensboro Bridge Celebration Com
mittee. Intended for river men, the
stockings will be hung so that tli'v
can be reacheJ with a pole from thj
deck of a tug. Tobacco, serviceable
gloves and other practical gifts will be
placed In the giant stockings.
ARTIST MARRIES.
NEW YORK. Dec. 24-Ceorg
McManus, the young artist of "Newly
Wed" fame, has himself become a
newty wed, having been married last
night in a local hotel to Florence Ber
gere, of New York, who is five years
his junior. The wedding was a quite
affair, only a few friends of the
bride and groom being present.
KOREAN GUILTY.
SAN FRAN'CISCO, Dec. 24. -In
Wan Chan, the Korean who shot and
killed Durham White Stevens, the
American diplomatist and advisor to
the Korean emperor, in this city on
March 23rd last, was found guilty of
murder in the second degree, by the
jury shortly before midnight. The
trial was concluded a little after 9
o'clock. Sentence will be passed on
December 26.
Muscular Pains Cured.

NO ADVICES RECEIVED.
CHICAGO, Dec. 23.-According to
advices received here no orders have
been issued by the War Department
recalling Colonel Fred W. Tucker
from Hot Springs, Ark. Mrs. Dolly
Logan Tucker, wife of the colonel,
says, however, that if such orders of
recall were issued she promptly would
resume her prosecution. Her attor
ney says that when the War Depart-
men does order Colonel Tucker back
to his post Mrs. Tucker will be noti
fied at once.
