Longshoremen's onions Noa. 6 and
J34, of Portland, have reached an
amicable understanding'over the nut
ter of jurisdiction, and as a result
there trill be no more trouble between
them at the docks. The international
iaterceded to bring about peace. A
telegram from J. C Joyce, secretary
of the International Longshore, Ma
rine and Transport-workers, to 3H
advised that organization to confine
its operations to handle freight at the
railroad sheds and not to interfere
with No. 6 in the loading an discharg
ing of ships. On receipt of the mes
sage from headquarters the members
of 334 agreed to the wisdom cf the
ruling and so notified their late oppo
nents. The differences which had
existed were quickly patched up and
each local gave the other full assur
ance that they would confine their
operations strictly to the class of
work they had been following prior
to the trouble.
The steam " schooner Yellowstone
ar.ived down from Raiaier yesterday
morning and was immediately board
ed by a deputy United States marshal
who en4d papers on the captain,
libeling her in the sum of $1500 for
sinking the gasoline launch Imperial
at Rainier. Captain Rorvik, master of
the Yellowstone, claims it is a put up
job and that his vessel did not sink he
but that the current caused her to
awing against his ship as they were
both lying at the dock. It is also
claimed that the launch was offeree!
for sale a short time ago. The cao
tain made a sworn statement to the
inspectors disclaiming all responsibil
ity and after putting up a bond the j
vessel was released and proceeded to
sea. . 1
The French bark Eugene Schneider,
RobaM, master, arrived in yesterday,
157 days from Antwerp via Hobart,
where she left October 2th. She
carries a cargo of cement consigned
to Balfour. Guthrie & Company and
will proceed to Portland and dis
charge after which she will return
here and take on a cargo of lumber at
the Hammond Lumber Company's
mills, she beipg under charter to them
for a European port The lumber tc
make up her cargo is all cut and or
the dock awaking her arrival, and the
company are very anxious to load her
at once as they are very much in need
of the dock room.
"The American schooner Fred-J.
Wood arrived from San Francisco
yesterday morning after one of the
quickest passages this season made by
a sailing vessel The feat of the Wood
is re graded by mariners as all the
more remarkable from the fact that
the wind was not favorable during thj
entire passage. The schooner it un
der charter to the North Pacific Lum
ber company to transport a cargo of
fir to San Francisco. She will leave
up for Portland today.
The Oriental liner Numantia is du
to arrive from Hong Kong via S:u
Francisco tomorrow. She ftft the Bay
City Wednesday and it is figured ij
will take her 60 hours to'come up the
coast as she is very light, having only
about 600 tons of cargo aboard, anl
consequently makes slow progress.
Two barks were reported outside
yesterday, one was the French vessel
La Tour d'Auvergne, Las Bras, mas
ter, 150 days from Antwerp, via Ho
bart, from where she sailed October
A LETTER FROl FORMER
FIRE CHIEF
BYGONE DAYS ARE RECALLED
" BY MISSIVE FROM JOE
O. CHARTERS
Chief Foster of the hre department
U in receipt of a letter from Joseph G
Charters, who many years ago was
chief of the volunteer tire department
in Astoria. Mr. Charters is now in
Cordova, Alaska, and he writes tj
Chief Foster for some by-laws of the
old company here. Doubtless many of
the old residents of this city will r
call Mr. Charters and will be glad to
hear that he is still doing things. H's
letter follows;
Dear Ed If my memory serves m;
well, I think that when you were a
boy we called you Ed. I don't know
whether you remember me or not.
You were only a small lad when I
left Astoria. I objected to you. lots of
times for taking hold of the drag
rope of one engines for fear you might
get hurt. I refer to it with pride that
these facts are true and that you arc
the paid chief of the same old depart
ment. Ed, we had a red-hot firemen's
election for chief here tonight. I
placed a candidate in nomination for
chief, a boy from Eugene, Ore., de
partment, and after a hard struggle I
won out It is hard to beat an old
Astoia fireman on these lines.
Chief, I want to ask a favor of you,
and I hope you will comply with my
desire. I wish you would mail me a
copy of the old Volunteer F. D. of
either Company 1 or Rescue 2, rules
and by-laws. You know I would pre
fer the by-laws, rnles and regulations
of Engine No t of the volunteer day.
My regards to all timers,
"l am yours truly,
"JOE G. CHARTERS."

Hardly a Christmas goes by without
a long list of fatalities or casualties
throughout the country. Commonly
the light and flimsy material used m
decorating the trees catches fire anif
burns with great rapidity, sometimes
spreading to the clothes of the little
children. Chief Foster says:
To the Citizens of Astoria:
Once aagin I respectfully call your
attention to the care and caution that
should be used in connection with the
Christmas trees and celebrations. The
decorations used in .the dressing of
the trees are very inflammable, and as
it is the children that are gathered at
these celebrations the greatest care
should be used so that no accident
will occur. . ;
Should a fire occur, go to the tele
phone and call for fire department
6-11. Then state plainly where the
fire is (don't get excited). At the pub
lic gatherings a member of the depart
ment with a Babcock will be detailed
if requested. ,

When A. E. Petersen built and
named the "Modern" barber shop, he
meant that it should stand for what
it was called. No patron has missed
a single feature of the modern ton

new device in the way of perfect
