tionately discouraged. A few mo
ments before 4 o'clock there was a
stir of interest as Judge Lawlor ap
peared from the chambers and as
fcumed a seat on the bench. The men
and women rushed to secure vacant
places in the courtroom or thronged
about the entrance.
The bailiff rapped for order and an
intense silence prevailed as the jury
filed into the courtroom and took
their seats. The stillness was brok
en by Judge Lawlor, who warned the
on-lookers to make no demonstra
tion. Next he glanced at the ver
diet and handed it to the clerk who
trad it aloud.
Just as he pronounced the words,
"Guilty as charged, the newspaper
men arose from their seats, to wave
a signal to the associate standing in
