OCEAN, BAR,
BAY,
At the steamer Lurline was going
through the Morrison street bridge
at Portland yesterday morning on
her way to this city, the big O. R. &
K. towing steamer backed into her
And smashed the latter stern-wheel
boose and broke down a stretch of
the Lnrlines railing; but happily, bo
grave damage was done to either
vessel For a time it looked as though
there was going to be a steamboat
"rough house' in the middle of the
Willamette, but the incident closed
in safety to all concerned and the
two big and popular boats went their
separate ways rejoicing. The Lur
line got down in good season last
evening and when she went back op
the river she had on board from this
city the followingnamed passengers:
P. J. Flynn, George Hibbert, Walter
Seaborg, Mrs. G. E. Wells, N. R.
Armstrong. Ben Wise, T. B. Freden
berg and G. F. Reis.
The Geo. R. Vosburg, the well
known Nehalem tug, went to sea
yesterday morning with a huge barge
In tow, laden deep with heavy rail
way supplies Including 250 tons of
railway iron. She went south to
Tillamook Rock, where she met a
stiff sou'easter, and decided to come
back. She made it to the bar al
right, but found it hard work to buck
h against the powerful ebb. She fi
nally accomplished it, however, and
will try it again when the conditions
are a bit more favorable, probably
today. .
The fine tug Wallula was busy on
Sunday morning last getting the
French barks Sainte Anne and Ville
du Hacre to sea. Both gallant ves
sels are now on their long voyage
around the Horn, deeply laden with
good Inland Empire grain.

MR. WINGATE DECLINED TWO

The following communication was
received at thi office last night and
is published as one of the frankest
expressions made during this com

port to every voter in the city:
"Astoria, Ore.. Dec. 7, 1908.
"Editor Morning Astorian:
"I desire "to state, through your
columns, that I might have had the
nominate for mayor of Astoria, or
ht nomination for city surveyor and
engineer, from one or more parties,
had I been wining to accept euner,
but I declined to accept either, from
any source, because I was, and am,
honestly anxious for the passage of
the Port of Astoria bill now before
the people, and was afraid any pro
nounced political action on my part
might jepardixe that measure owing
to the deep and active Interest I took
in its preparation and submission.
And I do not hesitate, here and now,
to urge every loyal Astorian to vote
for thia amendment at tomorrow's
pits. Very respectfully.

WHEN VOTERS HANDLE THE
CARDS TOMORROW THEY'RE
LIKELY TO PLAY IT.
The specter of the Irving slide
constantly arises to plague the mem
bers of the common council, and
like Banquo'a ghost, nothing will
keep it down. At the meeting of
the council last night there were
four or five communications in the
possession of the city auditor, all re
lating to the slide, and all speaking of
the "negligence" and "carelessness"
in carrying on the work, and all stat
ing that the city would be held re
sponsible to property.
The last communication to be filed
was by D. H. Welch .and is here
with given in full at an illustration
of the attitude that is apparently be
mg taken by all the property
owners:
"Gentlemen: -I desire to call your
attention to the damage being done
to the buildings and property on
Block 13, Shivcly's Astoria, by the
Irving slide and which block is dl
rectly north of said slide.
"There have been six families who
have moved out of the houses on ac
count of the damage being done
thereto, and two of said families
have moved out of my houses on ac
count of the damage.
"Your honorable body have had
sufficient 'time to remedy said slide
and to stop the damages to the prop
erty owners, failed to take action in
stopping said damage, and you have
sufficient time as yet to stop much
more damage being done. At the
last meeting , of the council it was
stated that action would be imme
diately taken, but as yet nothing has
been done to avert the continual
sliding of the ground and damage to
the properties. As an interested
party, I consider by your actions in
the matter .that the City of Astoria,
and possibly as well the council, in
dividually, are responsible for any
and all damage done to the proper
ties, on account of your or someone'
neglect in the premises. My property
is-510 feet from the north line of the
'Irving-avenue improvement.
"Trusting yon will take immediate
action to stop further damage being
done, I remain, youra truly,
"D. H. WELCH."
With the Irving-avenue improve
ment in the minds of the voters, and
with the fact that scores of lots have
been "confiscated" given up by the
owners, who could not afford to pay
the heavy assessments thereon
there seems litlte question that these
things will play an important part in
the election tomorrow. There have
been or will be over 1200 deeds placed
on record by the city of "confiscated
lots.
