Exalted Ruler N. D. Johnson and
hia atari of officers, had everything
well in hand and proved their concept
iind capacity for the diponl of the
long and arduous program. The
whole affair waa handled with digni
ty and conacicntioua conformity to
the high expression made by the
lodge on this one of its greatest day,
and there are none to deny.. them the
fullest measure of grutiilation,
Ex-Attrney General C M. Idle,
man, of Portland Lodge No. 142, one
of the ino accomplished orator of
the Stale, had been secured to deliver
(he address of the day and did it to
the pronounced pleasure and comfort
of the brethern and of the laity pre
ent. He chose the "Rclalionof Bro
therhood to Good Citixenship," and
proved the correlation in apt and con
clusive terms, giving due place and
atamlard to the great order he wan
peaking ("f, and convincing every
lcltirn in tlfc houne of the ever-living
demand upon him (or the bet and
hlgheat type of duty and action re
qui red at hit hand, It wai a fine ef
fort and waa thoroughly appreciated
by the thoutand who heard it. 1
"No. 180" waa peculiarly happy in
having among it gucatsandcontrilm

Portland aingeri, who came down to

Herein of the day, towit: Meisera 1
L. Wisdom, tenor; and Stuart Me
Guire, baritone; Misa Evelyn Hurley,
contralto and Mra. May Dearborn
Schwab, soprano. Their work in
Schimcker's "My Faith Look Up to
Thee,'' "and God Shall Wipe Away
All Tears," "Cod Is a Spirit" and in
the closing numbers, was exceeding
ly fine and gave pleasure unotintcd to
everyone in hearing; a did the in
struineniation of Mr. J. Hutchinson,
of I'ortland, their accompanist. Mr.
McGuire's splendid rendition , of
Duck's "My Redeemer and My Lord"
was one of the real features of the
intensely interesting program and
made deep impression; as did Mrs.
Schwab's lovely number, "In the
Hour of Trial," both offering de
lighting the hundreds who were eager
to appreciate all things so beautiful
ly and iuspiringly presented.
Miss Laurie MeCsmi, one of As
toria's most gifted singers, was in ap
preciable'cvidcuce with two exquisite
numbers, in which her perfectly train
ed contralto voice was heard with
splendid effect, "Promise of Life" by
Cowcn, and Liddlc's superb "Abide
With Me.", Miss McCann never fails
to charm her home audiences and
Sunday's contributions were given,
and received, with the some unfail
ing success and pleasure that marks
everything she does for Astoria.
.Will Gratke'a rendering of the ever-beautiful
"Thanatopsis" was among
the cardinal elements of the real suc
cess of this memorial gathering. It is
rare, indeed, that this famous and ex
quisite plea in poesy is better hand
led than he handled it. It is used so
much, in public, that its beauties are
become almost trite from reiteration;
but Mr. Gratke was fortunate enough
to compass its rendering with a force
and grace that invented it with all its
known, but often unrealized, strength
and beauty.
Mrs. Charles H.Abcrcrombic'i fine
gifts as a pinniste were in demand in
se vet hi of the strong elements of the
best program ever unfolded in this
behalf, and her responses were all
that could be desired, as they invar
iably are.
