work. That is acting, my boy."
Rice and Cady are the successors of
Weber and Fields, German dialect
comedians, and in "Hipl Hip!

success that Jos. Weber's Music Hall

production comes here, with which
show girls and "squabs' figure con

SUNDAY NIGHT. -
One night, some years ago when
Rice and Cady,, the stars' of "Hipl
Hipl Hooray! who will be seen at
the Astoria Theatre on Sunday
night, were dressing at a San Fran
cisco theatre, a card was brought to
them bearing the name of Joseph
Jefferson. A moment later,' the most
distinguished actor on the legitimate
stage of America was ushered into
the presence of the delighted young
actors. He complimented them both

RHEUMATISM
REPORTS SHOW MANY CASES
OF RHEUMATISM AND GIVES
A SIMPLE HOME RECIPE.
Thousands of men and women who
have felt the sting and torture of this
dread disease, which is no respecter
of age, persons, sex, color or rank;
will be interested to know that while
for many years rheumatism was con
sidered an incurable disease, now it
is one of the easiest afflictions of
the human body to conquer. Medical
science has proven it not a distinct
disease in itself, but a symptom
caused by inactive kidneys. Rheuma
tism is uric acid in the blood and
other waste products of the system,
which should be filtered and strained
out in the form of urine. The func
tion of the kidneys is to sift these
poisons and acids out and keep the
blood clean and pure. The kidney,
however, are of sponge-like tub
stance, the holes or pores of which
win sometimes, either from ; over
work, cold or exposure become clog
ged and inactive, and failing in their
function of eliminating these poisons
from the blood, they remain in the
veins, decompose and settling about
the joints and muscles, cause the un
told suffering and pain of rheuma
tism and backache, often producing
complications of bladder and urinary
disease, weakness, etc.
The following simple prescription
is said to relieve the worst cases of
rheumatism because of its direct
action upon the blood and kidneys,
relieveing, .too, these most severe
forms of bladder and urinary trou
bles: Fluid Extract Dandelion, one
half ounce; Compound Kargon, one
ounce; Compound Syrup Sarsaparil
la, three ounces. Mix , by shaking
well in a bottle and take in teaspoon
ful doses after each meal and at
bedtime. The ingredients can be haj
from any good prescription phar
macy, and are absolutely harmless
and safe to use at any time.

NEW YORK LETTER
NEW YORK, Nov. 24.-With tur-l
keys and pumpkins piled to the roof
on every market stall in town, Goth-
am is to-day setting about the cele
bration of a real Thanksgiving Day
the like of which has not been seen
on this island in many years. Feast
ing was a farce a year ago with finan
cial ruin peering in at every pane of
the dining room windows through
out the panic-stricken metropolis.
This year, however, the sight of the
extra car loads of plump gobblers,
with which every dealer here has for-
stalled a general rush for the festive
bird, is assuring everyone that plen
ty has already taken the place of
panic. Strings of wagons, laden 9 the
roof, with Thanksgiving things from
the grocers, butchers, wine man and
confectioners, are to-day touring the
town to fill advance orders for next
Thursday's spreads in every house.
It is seldom that New Yorkers have
cause for the feeling of general thank
fulness which is beginning to flood
the community, and few inhabitant!
of this city will fail to lavishly cele
brate this harvest home.
Highway crime is to-day holding
sway in every suburb of this city t3
a more serious extent than has been
known in recent years. Holdups have
nightly been reported from all sec
tions of the Westchester, Long Is
land and Jersey outskirts until the
authorities have become thoroughly
alarmed.. TTo check this sudden out
burst of out-door robbery the police
have t-day set an emergency watch
throughout the more open stretches
about the city limits. No one can ac
count for this sudden upset of the
conditions which have for years made
it safe to walk abroad at night even
in the most remote corners of Man
hattan. The trade of the street thug
and highwayman hereabouts has al
ways been thoroughly discouraged by
the police force and until 'this week
no one felt that the bluecoats were
unable to cope with this open form
of crime. Within the next week it is
planned that wholesale arrests of the
men behind the masks shall stamp
out this alarming succession of hold
ops. '
Though the return of old Ross
Croker is to-day the talk of every
Tammany 'togue, no real upheaval in
the local regime is expected from
this visitation of the Irish squire.
Age has set its seal on the once-powerful
Dick Croker welt at upon
the greater number of his followers
in the rank and file of Tammany
Hall. Where years ago the ex-boss
could have returned to find a mighty
force of the wigwam braves drawn
up, eager and active to back his ev
ery whim, this phalanx is to-day more
fit for an old-man's home than for
political fight. One by one the men
who would follow Croker to the edge
of eternity with blind devotion have
lost their grip upon the seats of pol
itical power together with their gray
hairs, teeth and physical strength.
Like Larry Delmore who passed
away, a broken old man, last year,
the old Croker guards are to-day dead
or dying. In the heart of the younger
legion of the present Tammany
chiefs no fear is felt for the faded
presige of Dick Croker.
That good old Madison Square
Garden will stand for many a year
to house the great events of this me
tropolis seems to-day assured in spite
of its present shaky status. Groups
of philanthropic, civic and speculative
capitalists have already sprung for
ward to prop up the finances of this
historic institution in such number
and with such strength that its
thrcantened razing is now practically
averted. If Broadway . were, to be
plucked up by the roots and ban
ished from this town, no more popu
lar commotion could be aroused than
has been stirred up by even the sug
gestion of doing away with "the gar
den." Man and boy, every New Yor
ker must associate the beautiful buff
building with many of the gayest
hours of his life. The most notable
events in the world of sport, music,
horsemanship, amusement, art and
industry have been held here within
the memory of the present genera
tion. If the. talk of felling this pleasure
palace was only a bluff, as is charged,
all New York has risen to call it.
Reducing the Grecian glories of
the Marathon to a duel on the dry
circuit of an indoor track is not rous
ing people here to much enhusiasm,
as Hayes and Dorando to-day pre
pare for heir stagy effort. No one be
lieves that any true test of the rela
tive stamina of the winner and vic
tim of the great outdoor race In Eng
land, can be made in circles under a
roof. The mechanical' grind of the
six-day bicycle races it too famaliar
to the public here for anyone to real
ly expect a dashing long distance con
test in the cramped oval track. A
crowd will be attracted largely to
look over the two famous contes
tants; but no one anticipates much
real sport.
