THANKS BEI
Astoria his an immense deal to be
thankful for; and so far as one can
determine, she ia duly grateful for
all that is, and has been, hers. No
tably she is glad and thankful for
the magnificent and universal health
that is hers; that she is on the up
grade, commercially, civically, educa
tionally, and generally; that she is
holding her own with her Pacific lis
ters; that she has less idle people
than most of them; that her children
are the sturdiest and handsomest in
the land; that her mills and fisheries
and businesses are still flourishing
and promising; that her future is
well forecasted in the election of
Samuel Elmore to the mayoralty and
a Republican council to the city hall,
and that the "non-partisans' have left
her enough of public credit upon
which to base and build her civic re
demption! BUSINESS, AND THE LAW.
These terms are to constitute the
slogan of the new municipal admin
istration under the leadership of
Samuel Elmore. To these elemental
and essential qualities everything
municipal will be trimmed, closely,
and exactly; nor will they be over
done nor under-done. Economy, and
justice to every man, and taxpayer,
in the city, will be the rule of the
hour; honest retrenchment, and im
partial consideration are to be ap
plied in purely business fashion, just
as they are applied to private affairs
of the epople; no man's business is
to be invaded nor circumscribed nor
interferred with, save as its proprie
tor shall invite especial action; there
will be no wholesale innovations nor
radical re-action, but things will be
brought and held to an actual busi
ness basis for the good of the whole
people. Business principles will be
applied to the biggest and the littlest
phase of the public status, and As
toria will be once put on the level of
sheer equity, rational method, popu
lar interest and general fair-dealing
as business and the law dictate!

Men with brave candor and honest
aims and hich impulses, at his age

ly needed in Oregon, to. retrieve her
from the slough of industrial and po

been brought He was a helpful
man and his agency in the adjust

be gravely missed as time accentu
ates the loss the State has sustained
in his death.

The interesting point about Count

how many more titled cousins ex

fact that turkeys are high and scarce.

Curious Way ln Which It Affteted
Woman's Imagination.
"I oan't stand this an? longer, doc

"What's the troublef asked her

"She has one of these squeaky old

she did nothing but toss to and fro,

The next morning the nervous wo

mood.
"How did yon sleep V asked the doc

much obliged to yon. It made a great
difference.''

Got Quite Pleasant.
The m'stres of a hospitable home In
New York recently had to employ a
new second girl whose work she liked,
but whose blunt and forbidding man
ner she liked not at all. She talked to
the girl and urged ber to be pleasant
and agreeable whenever she bad to say
anything to other people, particularly
visitors.
A great surprise for the mistress fol
lowed this admonition. The next day
the girl happened to attend the door,
and she opened it just as her mistress
was passing through the ball. To the
astonishment and bewilderment of the
latter the girl reached out and, catch
ing the caller by the band, actually
dragged her Inside the door, express
ing her pleasure at seeing her, and
then hastened to announce the call to
her mistress. New York Sun.
