The election in the city paised off
quietly, the vote being Iow but
tteady. The polU opened at 7 o'clock
yesterday morning and at no time
wa ther any rush at the polling
place. In all the precincts, except
ing No, 3, the count was immediate
ly commenced after the closing, of
the polls and before 8 o'clock the
Astorian was able to announce that
the vote of those precincts. The
udge and clerk of No, 3 went to
supper before opening the box and
a a consequence it was nearly 9
o'clock before the total result was
known.
Early In the evening throng be
gan to gather at the Astorian office
where the returns, as fast as receiv
ed, were thrown on a canvass by a
stereopticon, and as the night wore
on the crowd Increased until Com
mercial and Tenth street were
blocked. That the enterprise of the
Astorian was appreciated was shown
by the close attention paid to the
bulletins and he words of commen
dation heard on all aide.
There wa little yelling and hur
rahing done; an "I told you so" feel
ing prevailing among the Republi
cans, and a hopeless feeling of des
pair among the Bryanites. The new,
while not definite, early in the even
ing, wa sufficiently clear to enable
good prognostication of the final
result. The result of the voting in
the different precincts is appended
from which it will be seen ,that Taft
carried Astoria by a large vote.

IMMIGRATION, TIDE.
NEW YORK,' Oct. 3.-Oscar
Straus, secretary of Commerce and
Labor, inspected Ellis Island yester
day and announced himself as sat
isfied with the progress on improve
ment under Way. "Statistic! for
October' said Mr. Straus, "Show the
tide of travel has turned. For the
nine months ending September 30th
the total arrival of immigrants at
this port was 272,000, while for the
same time the number of alien de
partures was 414,000. Last month,
on the contrary, Immigration exceed
ed emigration, the number incoming
being 41,000 against 35,000 outgoing."
