WHAT A Cf&AR DID FOR
GENERAL GRAHT
FAMOUS WAR LEADER AND
ADMIRAL FOOTE CONFER
ON LATTER'S FLAGSHIP.
TURNED BATTLE AND SMOKED
Incident Brought Home Gifts of
Thousands of Choice Cigars and
Confirmed His Habit of Smoking.
DETROIT, Mich., Nov. 2.-Major
General Fred D. Grant who is pre
siding at the court martial now in
session at Fort Wayne, in the wes
tern suburbs of this city, said to some
friends here that the cigar which had
initiated his father, the late Presi
dent U. S. Grant, into the tobacco
smoking habit, really figured quite
strongly in the winning of the battle
of Fort Donaldson. Speaking of this
incident, General Grant said:
, "My father was in conference with
Admiral Foote on the latter's flag
ship and had just accepted a cigar
from the admiral when word came to
him that the left flank of his forces
wis being repulsed. Hurring ashore
and galloping on a fleet horse to the
battlefields, he succeeded in rallying
his forces so completely that chaos
was turned into victory. General

IT'S A GOOD THING TO REFER
to the reputation of a store before
making any important purchases
thereia. Before you buy is the time
to look up the matter. Ask questions.
Find out if the store you intend pa
tronizing keeps its pledges. Be sure
that you learn if it sells the qualities
it claims; if it treats ts . customers
tonestly and fairly, then, if satisfied,
buy there. Do all the asking you
wish about us among your friends,
and that you will result in your com
ing here regularly. ,

from
i mouth. The dispatches from the
front told how father had come on-
fto the battlefield 'cool and collec
ted, and peacefully smoking a long
black cigar."
"People who read the story began
sending congratulationes and pre
sents of cigars. Tens of thousands of
cigars came and my father smoked
many of them. It made a confirmed
smoker of him. But he did not
smoke as many cigars as people
imagined he did. Sometimes one
cigar that he would frequently re
light would last him from breakfast
to luncheon. It was the fact that he
almost constantly held a cigar be
tween his fingers that made people
describe him as a great smoker."
General Grant said that his father
tried to acquire the smoking habit
at West Point just because the
rules forbade smoking. His attempts
at smoking while he was a cadet,
however, made him very sick" and
when he left West Point he practi
cally gave them up. During the Mex
ican War, General Grant said, his fa
ther took a liking to the Mexican
cigars; and found that they agreed
with him, but when he returned to
the North he again dropped the hab
it of smoking, to resume it after the
Fort Donaldson incident.

FOUND MURDERED.
NEW YORK, Nov. 2,-ln one of
the galleries connecting the tubes of
the Pennsylvania Railway tunnel in
East Thirty Second and 33rd Streets
was found yesterday the half nude
body of an Italian workman who, the
police investigation shows, was mur
dered after a desperate resistance.
Except that he was known to his
fellow workmen as "Jim" and that
he had been saving money with
which to return soon to Italy, noth
ing is known of him. The motive for
the crime was robbery and the man's
throat was cut by his murderers. His
clothing was torn off by them in ef
forts to find if money was secreted
on it, but they overlooked several
hnndred dollars hidden in a pocket.
