Married Man In Trouble

BRYAN MUST EXPLAIN.
Bryan's attacks, as vague and in
definite in expression as they were
baseless in fact, upon the record and
candidates of the Republican party,
have served one good purpose they
,have called the attention of many
who might otherwise have remained
in ignorance to what has been accom
plished by Republican administra
tions during the past 12 years, and to
the true character of the men whom
the Republican party has placed in
nomination.
So far from being on the defensive
the Republican party has not only
challenged, but welcomed, inquiry,
and it is not too much to say that
thousands of Democrats have been
led 'iy the facts as presented to take
a stand for the continuation of Re
publican policies under a Republican
administration. Bryan's ranting has
ceased to have the power it once had
because those who thought at first
that where there was so much noise
there must be something behind it
have found there was nothing behind
it except the Chinese plan of seeking
to scare a foe with tomtoms,
screeches and howls. The Republi
can party and the party's candidates
met the tomtoms with the artillery
of facts, and Bryan is now on the
run. He has discovered that the av
erage American voter is not to be
fooled into mistaking for a substan
tial meal a Barmecide banquet of
wind, and that while audiences may
sometimes show good humor by giv
ing a candidate an uproarious recep
tion, they are apt to do some think
ing before they vote. Bryan has
found that out before.
For the rest of the campaign Bryan
will be on the defensive. That means
that he will have to do some explain
ing, not only about his party's rec
ord, but about the record he has
made for himself. And why should
he not? Mr. Taft does not ask that
anything in his career be forgotten,
or apologized for, or omitted from
consideration by the voters to whom
he appeals. There is no reason in
justice, logic or fair play, therefore,
for drawing a domino over the real
Bryan and allowing him to masque
'rade as an innocent just brought into
the limelight.
Bryan must either defend Bryan or
take to the woods and stay there.
TUBERCULOSIS.
The Tuberculosis Congress just
closed in Washington, was one of
the most important conferences in
recent times. Truly it was the most
important if the preservation of hu
man life is vital. , Bubonic plague has
been analyzed and checked. The
cause of yellow fever has been solved
and met by scientific methods. There
is no fear that our authorities in the
Philippines" will be unable to check
and stamp out cholera. But tubercu
losis goes on every day, every month,
every year, all over the world, with
its toll of lives exceeding the worst
ravages of the most desperate wars. ,
It is a steady, continuous, unre
lenting toll on human life. rAnd it is
worse than the terrifying plagues,
because it goes on all the time. It is
said that the death rate from ' con
sumption in America is thrice that of
the mortal injuries of the battles of
the Civil War. And there are prov
inces in Europe that not only have
been decimated but absolutely : de
vastated by this disease,
If there is any duty of government,
it is to cope not only with pestilence ,

which slays more than the plagues
destroy. Thereforejt is to be hoped
that the discussions held by the dis
tinguished delegates from all over
the whole civilized world will event
uate in measures by the various gov
ernments to solve the problem of this
most destructive of maladies. In this
movement the United States should
take the initiative. We spend a bil
lion dollars a year for national gov
ernment, while thousands upon thou
sands die by the ravages of a disease
the cure of which may be discovered
by the application of a comparatively
small sum to stimulate research and
sustain experiment.
Woman Interrupts Political Speaker
A well dressed woman interrupted
a political speaker recently by con

The brethren are quite as certain
that Bryan will be overwhelmingly
elected as they were in 1896 and
some Republicans are quite as badly
scared now as they were then.

After all, those canned speeches are
not cutting a very wide swath as the
campaign progresses.
Have you yet found yourself in the
whirl of the political excitement?

"A tax on legitimate business to pay
the losses of speculation" is a fair def
inition of the Democratic proposition
to guarantee national bank deposits.
The application of the pure food law
to the Democratic issues would re
quire the use of a tremendous quantity
of disinfectants.
The 8,500,000 wage earners who have
money in the savings banks are not
clamoring for the "guarantee" stimu
lus to speculation with bank funds.

This Is truly a campaign of educa
tion, and the amazing thing la that
two other campaigns have taught
Bryan nothing more than to try to rub
off the blackboard the demonstrations
that time has proved erroneous.
Mr. Bryan says he Is not running
away from his record. He cannot,
however hard he may try.
Mr. Bryan Is so fond of theorizing
upon governmental processes that he
shouldn't complain because the people
prefer to let him be president in theory
only.
