Authoritative Word ,
C. M. Celler,' a prominent member
of the Astoria Regatta Committee,
yesterday morning informed a re
porter for, the Astorian that the tie
lay iu presenting the report of the
1908 Regatta was due to the fact that
a number of the contributors to the
festival fund has failed as yet to
make good on their subscriptions
and that while none of them would
forego the obligation it was a diffi
cult matter to effect a settlement of
the sums still outstanding. It will
be made and presented to the public
a loon as these are closed.
New Wholesale Project
There is a quiet, but well defined
movement on foot in thi city for the
early establishment of wholesale
grocery here, ffacked by trained in
telligence and plenty of capital, a
quantum of the latter being furn
ished by a well known Portlander;
but the plan is wholly Astorian and
it will be established and maintained
as of. this city and will be ready for
wider and fuller publicity when the
parties at interest have carried their
plans to a ampler degre of certainty.
The matter is well backed and has
all sorts of encouragement. The As
torian h not permitted to say more
than this now.
Want Information
City Surveyor Tee and Mr. Kear
ney, the street superintendent, have
addressed a communication to the
common council for presentation at
the meeting tonight, asking for
further information in regard to the
Adair drain. The council recently
referred the matter of the drain to
these officials with power to act.
The question now has arisen whether
the power to act extends over only
that portion of the drain mentioned
in the petition on which the action
was taken, or over the entire drain.
The people in that vicinity are as
serting that it is to be or should be
over the entire drain.
Wedded Last Evening x
At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam Dcnch, No. 3735 Eighteen street,
in this city, last evening at S o'clock,
their daughter, Miss Johanna Dench
became the bride of Mr. Edward
Long, and the happy young people
departed on the steamer Lurline for
a honeymoon trip on Puget Sound.
They will return to Astoria in about
10 days and will make their home
here. Mr. Long is a well known, en
ergetic young citizen of Astoria and
a valued employe of the Astoria &
Columbia River Railroad Company,
in its bridge department; and the
pretty bride is one of the most popu
lar girls i'.i the city, charming and
womanly, with hosts of friends who
will wish them both an abundance of
all things that make for happiness
and success.
Smoker For Visitor
Members' of the Chamber of Com
merce will give a smoker at the
rooms of the association Thursday
night in honor of W. T. Forsythe of
Philadelphia, who is here investigat
ing the outlook for the new electric
line to Seaside and Cannon Beach.
The plan is to make the affair an in
formal one, when business men and
other citizens can meet Mr. Forsythe
and extend a welcome to him. That
the city of Astoria is taking a great
interest in the line the representative
of the financial concern probably
finds at every turn, and Thursday
night there will be a chance to let
him know a little more of this thriv
ing community. The members of
the Chamber arc requested to attend
the smoker and help make it a
cheerful occasion.
