Will Be Clad To Hear
Now that the 1908 Regatta has
become hi-tory, and pleasant history
at that, with its bills alt paid and its
accountings all madev there are those
who would be glad to know what
the balance is, if any. This office has
been asked for this information sev
eral times lately, and the presump
tion is always in favor of the com
mittee making it public when it is
ready, and if, it is not inopportune,
the information from there would be
the most reliable and acceptable.
Taking In The Country
Messrs. F. L. Evans, of the As
toria.Scaside & Tillamook Electric
line, and W. T. Forsythe, the
Philadelphia expert now here to
scrutinize the proposed system and
its bearings, were out Hammond-way

Steamship Man Here
Geo, J, Richardson of the Rich
ardson Steamship Company is in the
city. The company runs a line of
steamers between this city and San
Francisco and do an extensive lum
Iter carrying business, Mr. Richard
son's company has done much to dc
vclop the coastwise lumber trade and
the business done by the line has
been, very satisfactory to the com
pany. Though but a very short time
in the business they now run three
stamen regularly each one carrying
capacity cargoes from this port.
Ready For Business
Yesterday morning Secretary Jas.
Wallace, of the Clatsop County Dem
ocratic central comniitte, opened the
headquarters of that "forlorn hope"
nt the old Regatta office on Eleventh
street; and surrounded by "tons of
literature" and a , swarm of his Re
publican friends, launched the agency
upon its way, whersoever that may
lead. At all events the amiable sec
retary will always have a gust of hot
air on tap and the hppy assurances
born of "deathless" hope to hand
out to his friends of cither political
persuasion.
Coei To Portland
The submerged hull of the derelict
steamer Minnie K. Kelton, which has
had a long and dubious history dur
ing this year, has been sold to Henry
Hewitt, of Portland, just at it lies,
with what of cargo, machinery, etc.,
may be therein, and will be taken
hence within a reasonable time. She
was sold under call for bids, and Mr.
Hewitt outbid his competitors, but
just who they were, or what the
scope of their bids, or his, is not
given for publication by G. W. Rob
erts, the agent of the 01 R. & N.
Company, at this point.
Changed His Office Relations
H, E. Clianlcr, the well known and
popular freight and rate man of the
S. Elmore & Company office, has
severed his connection with that
company, and returns to the service
of the Oregon Lumber Company.
He will be stationed at Inglis for the
present. Mr. Chanter has made many
friends during his stay in this city,
who will be glad to keep in touch
,v;ib him. He will be succeeded by
John S. Girdncr, recently dock agent
at Portland for the American-Hawaiian
Steamship Company who
takes over the post today.

Case Of "Misinformation
In the issue of the Morning As
torian of Tuesday last, it was stated
in perfect good faith and upon infor
mation deemed entirely authentic,
that Ancc! Bablcr of llwaco was a
presumed victim of the Star of
Bengal disaster, along with Norman
Hawkins of that place. Ancel Bablcr
is not dead, and the Astorian is as
glad as anyone else that this is so.
He called at this office yesterday to
say so, and then left for the me
tropolis on the evening train. The
Astorian deprecates the misinforma
tion upon which it was led into the
error and promises not to "do it
again" until it has the proper basis,
for which it is willing to wait for
many a year to come.
Raked Him Down
Harry Blanchard of the popular
liner Lurjine was called down good
and hard by the managers of his com
pany last week. When Blanch as
sumed charge of the purser's office on
the Lurline the freight list was light,
the passenger traffic normal and the
boat was running on schedule. Two
weeks after the old craft was daily
loaded to the guards with freight of
alt descriptions. Such was - Harry's
personal popularity that his . old
friends along the route shipped and
traveled without stint or reason, and
the schedule of tle Lurline resembled
the old mail schedule of 1906-7.
Fearing that Pass Commissioner
Bailey of Altoona would again agi
tate the mail service Jakie Kamm
called Harry in- and plainly told him
to slow up on his soliciting business,
but Harry saw a twinkle in the old
man's eye and is happy. Cathlamet

SPECIAL U.U.IET
CALLED TOMT
BUSINESS OF IMPORTANCE TO
BE CONSIDERED MANY
EXPECTED AT MEETING
A special meeting of the stock
holders and members of the Astoria
Amateur Athletic Association is call
ed to meet at the Chamber of Com
merce rooms, October . 7,, 1908, .at
7:30 p, m. The building constructed
by Messrs. A, V, and C. B. Allen will
be ready for occupancy November 1st
next. It. i necessary that definite
arrangements be made to acquire ap
paratus; a lease must be arranged
for. Every member must be present
in order to make this organization a
success, The directors have a scheme
for reorganization.
The matter of ladies belonging to
the club was discussed and to in
crease interest in this particular
branch of the membership a com
mittee of ladies was appointed to
canvass for members and to make
known generally the fact that ladies
were eligible and desirable members
of the association; and that ample
provision would be made for their
pleasure and profit in the club. The
committee appointed consists of Mrs.
Herman E. Prael, Miss Nellie Ut-
zingcr and Miss Lcta Drain, and all
ladies desiring to become a member
should consult them. It was the
sense of the meeting however that
unless a sufficient number of lady
members were secured the club
would not be able to provide any
very elaborate arrangements for
them.

"ISLE OF SPICE."
Manager Frank Hanlm is entitled
to congratulations for the pleasure
he has wrought thi week for his
Astoria clientclle at the ppera house,
in securing and presenting two such
admirable schemes of entertainment
as "The Lonesome Town" on Sun
day last and the "Isle of Spice" last
evening.
1 The play last night was replete
with clever people, delicious music
an inimitable wit, and simply ablaze
with radiant color and bright effect
'and kept the house on the quivive
for delightful development. There
was not an empty instant of time
while the curtain was aloft and the
interest was unflagging until it fell,
always, upon ardent, and repeated,
bursts of hearty applause.
There were forty people engaged
in contributing to the bewildering
and pleasurable run of amusement,
and the story of love and adventure,
told in musical numbers, lost nothing
in any individual case; thty were all
excellent whatever greater or lesser
element they stood for in the general
presentatioi; of the hour. There is a
swing and verve to the music of this
dainty opera that wins it friends on
the instant and its interpretation was
all that could be desired at the hands
of its leaders. The fun-makers of the
night were "Slibsy Mackinaw" and
"Micky O'Grady," taken respectively
by Harry Watson and Harry Wil
liams, while the romance centered in
"Teresa" charmingl portrayed by
Miss Roberta Wilson. The whole
cast, which is far too long for the
urgency of this notice", was splendid
ly handled and detail is denied only
on account of time and space; for
there was compensation in every
character on the bill and no item of
assignment was slurred in the faint
est degree.
The curtain fell for the night upon
a house thoroughly well pleased with
a delightful play mostly admirably
given in every sense of the world.

Dairy Co. are requested to call and
