The Daily Market Report
' PORTLAND, Sept. 11.-Reports
here for several days been coming in
from a number of districts where hop
picking is now in progress to the ef
fect that the product was turning out
considerably short of expectations in
the matter of weight, the burr being
of fine quality and appearance on the
vine, but showing up light in the bale.
For a time it was thought that this
condition obtained only in a few yards
scattered throughout the Valley, but
the indications now are that it is quite
general throughout the hop fields of
the state.
As a result some of the dealers of
the city incline to the belief that the
estimates that have been made to
date of the size of the Oregon crop
this year will have to be revised. The
situation has not been canvassed suf
ficiently to make it certain that the
yield will fall materially short of ex
pectations as to weight, but investi
gations are being made as the harv'
est progresses, and crop estimates
considerably lower than those made
to date are likely to be given out in
the near future. That Oregon crop
this year will not total more than
80,000 bales is the belief expressed by
one dealer today, but he admitted
that matters were too uncertain just
now to permit of a final estimate.
