New York News Letter
NEW YORK, Aug. 28.-To close a
carnival of thievery such as this city
seldom suffered, the police are labor
ing to-day, at their wits' end, to com
pass a secret patrol of the great un
guarded stretches of the Metropolis in
the summer. Burglars, pickpockets,
yeggmen, bunco steerers, strong arm
men and sneak thieves have preyed
boldly on the closed vacancy as well
as the open ease of Gotham during the
last few weks of midsummer. Almost
every block in the deserted residence
districts, has felt the hanl of the
masked marauders and hardly an hour
has passed in the resorts and walks
of the Summer crowd that watches
wallets and jewelry have. not been re
ported plucked with impunity. Every
available sleuth is today being hustled
Out to lay hands on the rioting crew
of crooks and many a policeman is
stripping off his uniform to lie in wait
for the cowers that prey. Thousands
on thousands of dollars worth of loot
have been reported as the prize
of the underworld this week and, tin
less Bingham's men outdo themselves
at once, it is predicted that New Yor
kers will pay a toll of more than
million to their theives before the
Summer is over.
TRIAL TALES.
Since Dan O'Reilly has begun to
decorate the refreshment stands of
Park Row and tell his troubles in the
mater of Harry Thaw's bankruptcy
maneuvers, a sickly, yellow light is
beginning to be shed on the methods
of the legal lights of the criminal
bar of this City. To-day the specta-

FULL OF FANS.
Never in the history of Gotham has
the baseball fan run riot as he has in
these days of breathless struggle for
the pennant. With thirty thousand
souls packed into every square inch
of the grounds, ten thousand pressing
to everp point of vantage on the sur
rounding hills and many thousands
more clamoring before the closed
gates, the oldest New Yorker is forced
to admit that the Nation's sport has
never seen better days in these parts.
To-day the fan is no longer restricted
to any class of the cosmopolitan so
ciety of this town. Office boss and
office boy meet on the bleachers with
brokers, barkeeps, society belles and
shop girls to yell in long harmonious
cencert. Batting averages pass cur
rent in the conversation of the mag
nate's office as freely as in the saloons
and slums. Scores rival quotations
in the interest of Wall Street, and the
fortunes of the diamond are followed
as closely as the market. New York
may have only one real team thisj
year, but to every man on it there are
ten thousand rooters.
following cross scents, in the tireless
chase after a dissipated fortune is
neuseating to the public and not agre
abl to fellow members of the Bar.
More than one professional reputa
tion has been smirched in the hunt
for Thaw retainers and lawyers are
finding the telling of the inside sto
ry of the defense no less unpleasant
than the people in general have found
the tale of the trials. Apparently the
Thaw incident is one which can never
be closed.

first chance in many years to enforce
its traction rights, ine witnurawai
of the paper slips on the main cross
thoroughfare of Fifty-ninth Street has
caused great hardships to the poor
and unfortunate. Hundreds of the
crippled, sick and maimed in search
of cross-town clinics have each day
been refused passage for want of an
extra nickel. Thousands of working-
men have cut deep into the family
upport to answer the demand of the
trolley kings. If the authorities can
make good their promise to bring the
magnates to terms, New York will see
its first popular triumph within the
memory of the present generation.
ENTER EDISON.
No one is surprised to near that Ed-
son today is apparently farther along
in solving the air ship than those who
have devoted a lifetime to this parti
cular problem. The people of this
city know the talents of their "Wiz
ard" and, now that he has turned his
attention to this broad ield of science,
expect almost anything of him. No
public character is more beloved by
the crowd here than this veteran in-
entor and everyone is prepared to
see him bring over from his workshop
in Jersey new marvels at any time.
