Kinship of the
Monopolist to the
Highway Robber.

By WILLIAM J. BRYAN.
I
I
INSIST that the commandment "Thou shalt not steal"
applies as much to the monopolist as to the highway
man, and we shall not make any material progress in
the protection of the people from private monopolies
until we are prepared to obliterate THE LINE
THAT SOCIETY HAS DRAWN BETWEEN
THE ORDINARY THIEF AND THE LARGER CRIMINAL
WHO HOLDS UP SOCIETY AND PLUNDERS THE PUBLIC
THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTALITY OF PRIVATE-" MO
NOPOLY. -
- The man who 6tandi by the wayside and, holding a revolver to
your head, demands your money or your life is no more a criminal,
measured by every moral standard, than the man who, obtaining con
trol of a nation's fuel, collects a tribute from every householder,
offering him the alternative of payment or suffering from lack of fire.
It is entirely possible that very many of those who enjoy the
benefits of monopoly some as managers, some as directors" and some
merely as stockholders are unconscious of the principle ' involved,
UNCONSCIOUS OF THE MORAL CHARACTER OF THEIR
CONDUCT, but surely this is an opportune time to impress upon the
conscience of the nation the real moral character of the conduct of the
monopolist
And it is not sufficient that we shall appeal to the conscience of

follow i fdw rods behind him with a horse that he might have a ready
means of escape after having committed an act of robbery, we would
call the lawyer a party to the erime, and we would visit upon him the
same punishment visited upon the principal in the robbery, and so if
Borne one living near the spot where the robbery was committed fur
nished the robber with a change of clothing or, in return for a part
of the booty, conspired with him to conceal the booty until suspicion
was past, such a one could not escape legal responsibility for the crime.

and yet it 13 considered quite respectable today for
the legal representatives of predatory wealth to vi8it
State capitals and national capitals and prevent the
ENACTMENT OF LAWS INTENDED TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM
PRIVATE MONOPOLIES, AND IT IS EVEN MORE RESPECTABLE
FOR THE SALARIED ATTORNEYS OF THESE MONOPOLIES TO FOL

HONORS FOR ATHLETES.
On the Stability of Character.
By President HADLEV of Yale.
'VERY day and every hour we have to be making choices.
Sometimes the matter to be decided is one like the choice of
' a profession, which will affect our whole future life and
, which demands months of careful thought. Sometimes it is
a mere trivial choice of what we shall eat or drink, what we shall say
or do for our amusement, which is settled upon the instant and -then
forgotten. This principle we call a man's philosophy of life.
A CHILD CAN PERHAPS GET ON WITHOUT SUCH A PHILOS
OPHY, CONTENT TO DECIDE EACH QUESTION UNDER THE CON
TROLLING IMPULSE OR CONTROLLING FORCE OF THE MOMENT.
A MAN CANNOT, AT LEAST NOT UNLE83 HE 18 CONTENT TO
REMAIN INTELLECTUALLY AND MORALLY A CHILD. HE CANNOT
ACT ON ONE PRINCIPLE AT ONE MOMENT AND ANOTHER PRIN
CIPLE AT ANOTHER MOMENT AND EXPECT ANYBODY TO TRUST
HIM. " V".' -
He wfll have no stability of character. Nay, if we are to define
character as the habit of doing the same thing under different circum
stances, he will be destitute of ch.iracter itself. . ,
Prophecy of Prosperity ;
For Year 1910.
By President A. W. GARRETT of the Seibosrd Air Line Rsilwty.
ARK my word, 1910 will be THE GREATEST YEAR
IN THE INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL LIFE
OF THE COUNTRY.
The remainder of this year will show improvement in
the conditions, next year will see business grow in volume, and 1910
will open the eyes of the world. This is bound to come.
Confidence will have been restored, the money which is now being
hoarded through a general distrust of what the morrow may bring
will be poured into investing channels, and we shall see a GROWTH
IN BUSINESS WHICH WILL SATISFY THE FAIREST
HOPES.
