Employers of Negro Labor Are Being
Threatened by a Flood of Anony
tnous Letters, and the Trouble
Doesn't Seem to Subside.
CHICAGO, Aug. 2S.-A dispatch to
the Tribune from Springfield, 111.,
says:
Employers of negro labor in Spring
field are being threatened by a flood
of anonymous letters, which has been
trowing in volume daily, owing to the
recent race riot. For the first few
days it was thought that the letters
were the work of boys or irresponsible
individuals, but yesterday the condi
tion of affairs was found to justify an
investigation by Governor Deneen. A
delegation of negroes visited Gover
nor Deneen and promised to co-operate
with the law-abiding whites inves
tigaintg the letters. , ,
Furthermore, secret service officials
axe here trying to run down the writ
ers of the letters. There is a belief
that there is an organization of some
sort "behind the sending of the letters.
As a result of the race war bar
ter shops and hotels are without ne
gro help and Springfield lacks its
usual quota of bottblacks. A census
f the negroes is being taken to de
termine how many of them are out
f employment
Members of the Seventh Ilinois in
fanty comment on the fact that ap
parently respectable people in talking
to them about the situation say dis
passionately that "As soon as you
fellows are gone, we will have to get j
rid of these blacks. Springfield must !
be a white town."
The Seventh Regiment will leave
for Chicago tomorrow If present con
ditions continue, but there is a possi
bility that it will be held here until
Thursday to enable the grand jury to
return more indictments as a means of
quieting the disorderly element. The
grand jury made no returns yesterday,
but a total at least of 90 indictments is
probable before it .completes its la
bors. The cases against more of the
nen indicted are said to be clear.
ARTIST AT HOLDUP.
Mode Wineman Of Chicago Just Mis-
ses the Trouble.
CHICAGO, "Aug. 25. A dispatch
to the Tribune from Butte, Mont.,
says:
"The Quadrangle Club of Chicago,
will be the richer because of the dis
aster which overtook the Yellow
stone tourists yesterday when they
were held up and robbed by
highwayman. Its gain will
. i
through the addition of more scenes
to the Yellowstone collection now
gathered together by Mr. Mode
Wineman, a member of that club,
artist and lover of the wildwood.
Mr. Wineman, who already has
won fame by the Yellowstone park
pictures he has secured was continu
ing his eleven day walk through the
park, when in the canon he stumbled
n;ton the holdup scene. His first no-
rifkation was when he saw the mes-
senger rushing back for help. He
hurried forward in time to gain some
impressions of the aftermath of a
highway robbery if not to be in on
the real action.
Mr. Win-eman's tale of his experi
ence was as follows:
"I had been searching for beautiful
views of the park on an eleven 'day
walking trip when in the heart of the
wilderness two men galloped wildly
past me shouting, 'Holdup ahead
Don't turn back.' I was determined to
push formard and took to the thick
ets. "By the time I had arrived at the
scene of the holdup the robber had
fled, pursued by the soldiers who had
passed me on the way. When I saw
the turn of the road where the work
had been done, there was a group
of 125 persons, hysterical and frigh
tened, bemoaning the loss, of all the
valuables they had carried.
"Empty wallets, handbags, money,
checks, baggage checks, railroad tick
ets, hand mirrors and powder puffs,
left in a pile showed how completely
the robber had done his work.
"When the soldiers began pursuit
of the robber, I started a long walk
over the mountains where I could
reach a telegraph station and inform
my fiiends in, Chicago of my safety."

A Faithful Friend.
" I have used Chamberlain's colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy since
it was first introduced to the public in
1872, and have never found one in
stance where a cure was not speedily
effected by its use. I have been a
commercial traveler for eighteen
years, and never start out on a trip
without this, my faithful friend," says
H. S. Nichols of Oakland, Ind. Ter.
When a man has used a remedy for
thirty-five years he' knows its value
