and turnad a bland, unsmiling counte

"Whero Is it?" demnuded Winston
roughly In English.
The man made no rcspouse. Ho
merely stared Impassively Into the face
of tho American.
"Whore is it?" repeated Winston,
this time savugely. He thrust a band
Into bis pocket and drew a small, shin
ing .revolver. The weapon fell into
Ills hand cuslly, nnd his long brown
Angers closed about It as he raised It
toward the Chinese.
The man uttered a frightened squeal
and dodged into the back room, with
Winston close upon bis heels. He
crouched In a corner and fumbled nt n

"Get Bp!" commanded Winston
sternly. "Get np nnd answer my ques

the impassivity of his face was broken
by an ugly grin that distended his
wide mouth from ear to ear. "I don't
know where It Is," he replied in Eng
lish, thrusting his yellow, clawlike
hands Into tho sleeves of his blouse
and staring Impudently Into Winston's
fuce.
Winston sat down on a stool nnd
coolly leveled the revolver at the man.
"I'll give you two minutes," ho said
grimly. "Now hunt till you flud It!"
The man did not stir as he stood
there. The American slowly couutod

It fell upon him llko a blow. He could
not have told what fascluatlou It held
for him. Ho only knew that ho want
ed It above all other things and that
ho would move heaven and earth, If
possible, to recover It.
I will not relate what means he em
ployed to trace tho theft of the green
god. It Is mifflclent to say that be
traced It across the Pacific to Shang
bat, followed It to the old city, down to
that little curio shop of Yung's, and
finally bought It back at an absurd
price. He could uot prosecute the
thieves, for they were unknown to
him, and tbo impassive Yung was si
lent regarding tho manner lu which It
had como Into his possession. Winston
felt a atraugo reluctance to admit bis
possession of tbe god, aud so be return
ed to America with the god securely
concealed In bis belt. There It had re
mained for six months, and then one
day it disappeared again.
Drawn ns by a mugnet across tbe
ocean to that llttlo shop in old Shang
hni again, Winston dropped his business
and again trailed the Image to tbe
hands of Yung, puylug an exorbitant
price for it, only to return to America
and loso It a third time.
For tho third time he had recovered
his treasure, and now he hugged it
lovingly to his breast and gloated over
It with the eye of a' lover. The dull
green stono Boomed to glow with life
as bo looked. A thousand glints of light
sprang from tho curving. He was still
staring at it when the carriage drew
up before tbe Shanghai club. He thrust
tho Image luto his pocket aud ran up
tbe steps and straight Into tho arms of
Miller.

"I do want It" returned Winston
doggedly,
"Walt, kit down again." Miller
waited until bis friend bad resumed

site, surveying blm with gravely anx

lu bis bunds. "Until four years ego I
was the owner of the Jade god," be
said slowly.
"You!" Wlustpu ejaculated.
"Yes, I. I found It among my pos
sessions In a most mysterious manner,
and from that moment I bad no peace
of mind. It disappeared almost im
mediately afterward, and I trailed It
feverishly, madly, until I found It paid
a price aud took it home, only to lose
It again later on and to recover it In
the same manner. I can't tell wby I
wanted It. I am not a collector of
curios, but so long as I bad possession
of It I was content. Wben I lost It 1
was almost murderous In my desire tc
recover It. The prices I paid for the
Jado god nearly ruined mo. oi

when I had lost It, and then one da)
I w oke up, or some one woke mo up.
"How", asked Winston hoarsely.
"Told me the stpry. It's an old trick
with Yung. The Image certainly pos
sesses some magnetic power that in
fluences the owner to recover It at all
hazards w hen lost. Yung smuggles it
into tbe pocket of a gullible foreign
devil, such as you and I are. We find
It, yield to lta fascination. Yung's
agents steal it We start In hot baste
after it. Jealous lest some other
should possess It, we pay a blackmail
lug price for It nnd lose It again, and
ao it goes on Indefinitely until there Is
no more money to pay with, and then
wo lose It for the last time. That's
what happened to me. You remember
Jackson?"
Wlriston nodded,
"Shot himself wben bis money gave
out and couldn't get tbe god back
again. I've lost all taste for tbe thing
now. It can't fascinate me." Miller
looked down at the Jade image care
lessly. Then his gaze became fixed.
