Jersey Jake uttered an oath.

"louse understands de game?" whis

In a Yew minutes the train halted at
a little way station. Some one got off

the wrapper torn from one package.
"Thunder!" roared Bill as a flash of

With fevcriiih baste the other pack

any of them.

Bill as he savagely kicked tbe satchel
from him.

Jake, "but I've got de consolation of

Tbe papers next day told of the
strange and sudden death by lightning
on tbe Canadian limited train of Cash
ler Adams of tbe Merchant' National
bank of B. Mr. Adams, the papers
stated, was leaving on a much needed
vacation trip when stricken, lie was
an estimable man, enjoying tbe full
confidence of his business associates,
and was survived by a charming fair
Uy, who were plunged into deep grief
by his untimely death.
Toor Adams!" sighed the president
of the Merchants' National bank as he
read the papers. "Little did he sus
pect that we had discovered hia pecula

only out of respect for bis family.., ne
must have opened his grip and dlscov

carefully to take away with him
Then, I presume, be threw the grip
away, as the papers make no mention
of Its having been found. Well, I am
glad-for his family's sake."
