WHAT THE MAP SHOWS.
The map of the Columbia bar for
1908 has been issued from the office
of Col W. S. Roessler, chief of the
engineers in charge of the Columbia
jetty, and it shows all that has been
claimed for the bar improvement due
to the jetty ;in other words, it shows
a clearance of bar to 25.5 feet at mean
low water, on a range nearly 6000
feet wide in width.
This map goes forth to the shipping
world as well as to all other men
whether they are interested or not,
and is fortified with the sanction of
the United States government, a fact
that puts it squarely up to all who
dispute its correctness and reliability.
It is evident, however, if the sum of
efficacy is to be reached on the bar,
the north jetty is imperative. This is
but a matter slightly in excess of two
miles of construction and in much
shallower waters. We have not yet
heard any special recommendation of
this additional work from Colonel
Roessler's department, but we believe
it will be announced at an early day,
since it is essential that it be mooted
in time to secure the appropriation
within the period it shall be needed.
With that built, there can be no
further doubt of the principle of
jetty construction as applied to the
Columbia river.
guarded against all undue cost, but
the same wisdom that maintains this
standard can be used to meet the
new emergency and meet it suc
cessfully, and yet provide handsomely
for the exigency that, from all appear
ances cannot be finich longer overlooked.
THE PLUCKY FISHERMAN.
The world over the fisher for sea
fish is a plucky man; hardy, courag
eous, almost reckelss in his pursuit of
the gamey salmon, or cod or other
denizen of deep waters in or out the
bars of the world.
The Columbia river fisherman
is no exception to the rule. He 'is
the equal of any, when it comes to
personal bravery and devoted atten
tion to his business. Hence the ugly
mix-up on the bar Wednesday, in
.which eight men were cast into the
heavy flood and Matt Remes . made
the supreme sacrifice of the hour.
Counsel and friendly, advice counts
for nothing in such matters. As long
as the fish run, the fisherman will be
after them .taking every hazard that
presents itself, cheerfully and pluck
ily, and paying the extreme penalty
when it shall be demanded. Perhaps
the game is worth the candle, but to
the man along shore it does not look
it. The man who takes the risk and
meets it with his life is the only one
to make the accounting. Warning is
of no avail, here, nor anywhere else.
1 ON ITS OWN GROUND.
From all accounts it would appear
that the taxpayers of Astoria school
district will be soon up against a
proposition of expansion of school
room to accommodate the grwing
numbers of children for which it is
necessary to provide. If this come3
to pass, it strikes us the district will
do well to use its own block of land
in Shively's Astoria, and build amply
and well, to put up a building of not
less than 16 rooms, and if necessary
transfer the high school department
to that establishment.
The crisis will evidently be raised
by the continued disturbances beset
ting the grounds upon which the
present high school rests. If it shall
become a determinable fact that this
ground will slip in spite of all engi
neering to stop it, then the safety of
the lives of the children and young
people quartered there will demand
its abandonment. We know such a

THE PORTLAND WAY.
Just as soon as Portland realized
that Astoria was really doing some
thing in the shipping line by securing
the steamship Nebraskan for a cargo
out of here, she, too, finds twelve or
fifteen hundred tons of barley and
other stuff and calls the ship there
on a re-bated river pilotage, and the
fine vessel goes after it, of course.
This is all right, so far as Portland
is concerned, and no less than was to
be expected; but she can thank As
toria for the primary advantage of
getting the big liner in the Columbia
river. It is Portland's way; and may
well be copied here, and elsewhere. It
is what is called "going after busi
ness." We went after the Nebraskan
and got ber, and had hoped to use
the fact as a sign and guaranty of
our ability to secure some shipping
and to handle it with commendable
despatch; and, so far as these ele
ments go, we have made good. But
the cream of the venture is scraped
off by the adroit Portland hand and
we have, the modified comfort of
knowing we started the enterprise,
while the metropolis garners the real
effective credit of it all.
But no one is discouraged by the
issue that has befallen us in this par
ticular case. We shall continue right
along with this end in view and per
haps in time we shall get to handle
something that cannot be lured up
the river. We meant well and did
well so far as we earned the move
ment; and we don't propose to let up.

FOR WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP
The Undefeated Negro is Striving
After Wind and Strength, While
"Bat" is Trying to Get More Speed
and Boxing Skill.
SAN FRANCISCO, July 2.-Joe
Gans and Battling Nelson who will
meet on the afternoon of July 4 in
the Mission Street open air arena
Almeda County in a 45 round boxing
contest for the world's lightweight
championship, have practically finish
ed training. The pugilists are with
in easy striking distance of the weight
requirements, which call for 133
pounds at the ringside stripped, and
only work of the lightest kind will
feature the closing days in the rival
camps. Gans' method of training for
the coming fight, differed to a great
extent from the previous contests in
which the champion has figured. He
has confined his operations almost
entirely to road work gymnasium ex
ercises of the simplest nature, Box
ing has been entirely eliminated from
his routine. By adopting this course
Gans had had in mind the accumula
tion of strength and ', perfection of
wind in anticipation of a prolonged
struggle.
"It would be wasting valuable time
to indulge in useless boxing stunts,
as'lhere are other methods by which
the Dane must be subdued, "the cham
pion laughingly said. "Every one
knows that I do not require practice
in order to out-box Nelson."
Nelson, on the other hand, has paid
particular attention to the boxing
part of his work. The battler has de
voted himself unceasingly to a severe
system of conditioning, and appears
to be in as good condition as when
he last met the champion at Goldfield.

this, however, I shall use my own

force if necessary. You are going to
fight under Marquis of Queensbcrry
rules, and not London prize ring
methods."
The sale of tickets opened this
morning and at once there was a rush
for the choicest seats. ;
Betting has been very light to date
and there is little of the Nelson end
being offered. Gans is favorite at
odds of 2 to 1, and even money is be
ing wagered that the . colored cham
pion will win within' 25 rounds.
The contest is scheduled to com
