Insane Woman
LOCKED IN CELL TOGETHER
Powerful Italian Woman Has Matron
Ellen Sweet by the Throat, When
Assistance Arrives Raving Maniac
Will Probably Die.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 29.
Locked in a cell with a ravins man
he bent on murdering her, Matron
. Ellen Sweet of the detention ward of
the Emergency hospital, engaged in
a terrific struggle for life yesterday
tnorning. The maniac was Maud
Fochio, a woman who was brought
to the hospital Thursday night. She
is an Italian woman of great strength
Dr. Reuben C. Hill of the hospital,
and two stewards finally heard the
sounds of the struggle and succeeded
in rescuing the matron just in time
to save her life. She had lost con
sciousness, and the grasp of the in
sane woman was on her throat
Matron Sweet heard a noise in the
room occupied by the insane woman
and entered with no though of dan
ger, to attempt to soothe the patient.
She locked the door behind her as
she entered immedately she was set
upon by the maniac and borne to
the floor. The struggle that ensued
was terrible in intensity. For several
minutes the pair struggled and then
the matron lost consciousness. Help
tame at just this instant. After be
ing subdued by the stewards and
physicians and placed in a straight
jacket the woman became a raving
sianiac, and it is thought she will
die.

D. D. Coffey, general delivery

a good plan to treat the kidneys, for
my physicians had been unable to
give me any permanent relief. I
found that the use of Doan's Pills
proved my theory, for within a

their use until the trouble disappear

MAKING GOOD IN S. C.
Ex-A'storian R. C. F. Astbury Lining
up Profesionally and Successfully
The Central Point Herald just at
hand, has the following pleasant item
touching the well-known ex-county
surveyor of Clatsop county:
At a special meeting of the council
last Thursday evening Mr. R. C. F.
Astbury was employed as city engin
eer for the purpose of surveying the
town, to establish street and side
walk grades, street lines water and
sewer systems, etc. The intention
is to have all the necessary engineer
ing work done at the same time not
only in the interest of economy, but
that a proper basis be laid for all
necessary municipal improvements
which the future growth of the town
may demand.
Mr. Astbury has been for a num
ber of years county engineer of Clat
sop county and has been actively
engaged in practicing his profession
in that section of thu state. He re
cently purchased a valuable orchard
on Rogue River near Gold Ray and
in now a, resident of this valley. He
expects to begin work here about
July 10th, and by September 1st the
work of laying permanent sidewalks
and making permanent street im
provements will be under way. Many
property owners on Pine street have
been waiting for months to have a
grade established so they can put
in other improvements.
Besides surveying and mapping the
town Mr. Astbury is also retained to
report on the best method for secur
ing a water supply and furnishing an
estimate , of the probable cost as a
basis for calling an election to vote
bonds for that purpose, and it now
looks as though the long deferred
question of water works will soon be

outskirts of the city.
Fair in company with W. A. Wal
