NEW YORK. June 29.-To deco
rate the new institute fur sailors
which is jiiRt bring completed in this
city, portraits personally signed and
ent by the ruler of England, Ger
many, Italy and Denmark have to
day been received by the American
Seamen' Friend Society. Realizing
lhat many thousand of their subject
who follow the ica will soon be har
bored in the $.125,000 building of this
American organization each year,
King Edward, Kainer VVilbclm II,
ictor Emanuel III and Frederik
VIII have been quick to respond
through diplomatic channel to a re
quest for recognition of the interna
tionfil character of this enterprise.
When the modem hotel and club
quarter! is thrown open in August
to the neven thousand sailors who
arrive each day in this port, twelve
nation! of the world and many Kates
In this country will be represented
by some room, furnishing or decora
tion in the building.
Ranged along beside the picture of
Theodore Roosevelt, which the Presi
dent personally presented to the so
ciety last month "with heartiest good
wishes", portraits of royalty will be
hung where every sailor may read the
uiograpncu inscription ot his own
overelgn. The bold hand-writing of
Kaiser Wilhelm himself is affixed in
good English to his latest portrait,
while the King of England has traced
"Edward R and I" beneath his pict
ur wiw nis own nana, ine same
rare attention has been paid by the
rulers of Italy and Denmark. This
unusual courtesy is believed by the
diplomats here to be a recognition
of the service of eighty year! which
the society has performed for mil
lions of British, German, Italian and
Danish seamen all over the world.
Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Mas
sachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, N'ew
Jersey, New York. Ohio, rcnnsyl
vania and Vermont have already
claimed representation in tne new
sailor's institute by selecting some
one of it two hundred rooms to fur
nish as a memorial. It is believed
that every state in the union will be
as anxious to make its seafaring sons
feel at home here as are the outside
nations. The Order of Sons of St
George and the St. Andrew Society
and the St. Davids Society have to
day secured memorial quarters, as
well as the Board of Pilot Commis
sioners, the Pilots Association of
New Jersey and the Masters Mates
and Pilots Association of New York.

stoker who is looking for a snug
berth out of reach of the land sharks.
A swimming pool, showers, billiards
music, writing aim reading rooms
are some of the things which Jack-
ashore may enjoy to lus heart s con
tent. He may patronize a safe bank,
a modem restaurant, an honest "slop
shop" to replenish his kit, or ship
through a special free bureau. For
the first time in the history of the
world the merchant sailor man in
great numbers may here spend his
time in port in just as retired, decent
respectable surroundings as any
other traveler.
"The chance to be as self-rcspcct-ing
as any other class of men is all
the sailor' wants", said G. McPlicr
8on Hunter, secretary of the Ameri
can Seamen's Friend Society at its
headquarters, 76 Wall Street, to-day.
"I know the sailor and I am sure he
will rise to his first opportunity of
living like other men in port. It has
taken $250,00 to build our institute
and we are still looking for $50,000
to furnish it properly, it will open
. i a world-wide benefit to the sailor

Then I tried D. D. D. Prescription.
