Army Surgeon Arrives
Major Ebert, chief surgeon of the
Department of the Columbia, arrived
in Astoria on the night train last
night to enquire into the smallpox
scare on the transport Sherman. . Dr
J, M. Holt was unable to meet Major
Ebert at the train ,and asked John M
Whyte of the Chamber of Commerce
to meet the visiting surgeon. Major
Kbert will probably simply ascertain
what has been done in the smallpox
matter. It is not probable that he
will go to the transport, for if he did
he might have to stay there, for Dr.
Holt is maintaining a strict quaran
tine which probably would apply to
army and navy surgeons as well as
others.

Mayor Will Act
The special committee appointed
at a recent meeting for the purpose
of securing a chairman for this year's
regatta were unable to induce sev
eral cligiblcs to take the place but
they have finally got Mayor Wise to
get into the harness again. -The
Mayor has 'about all he can attend to
now; but rather than see the regatta
go by default, he has agree to take
this additional work upon himself.
Mr. Wise holds that when things are
a little quiet, mat ttien is tne time
to get a "move on." "When it is
cold you build a fire; when it is hot
you long for icre cream: so, when it
is dull, 'get busy,' and I'd rather fore
go my intended Eastern trip than let
the regatta fail," said the Mayor.

For Band Concerts
The members of the park commis
sion are anxious to have weekly con
certs in 'the city park, but the
meager sum received from the half
mill tax is barely sufficient to amake
the most necessary improvements.
Hence an appeal is made that the
people of Astoria emulate the ex
ample set by the people oF other cities
who donate money for a music fund
thus brightening up the younger gen
eration. . "Music makes the children
happy and what is better than the
sight of hundreds of people thus en
joying themselves at least once a
week," says Mayor Wise. Anyone
whose soul can still drink the sweet
strains of a brass, band, wilj find
park concert subscription list by
calling upon Mr. John E. Gratke or
Mayor Herman Wise, and may leave
a few shekels for a worthy cause
"Remember, every little bit added to
what we have, make a little more
music." Several members of the
park commission have each given $5
to the fund.
