The annual school election for the
purpose of electing one director is of
vital importance to the public schools
of Astoria. Upon the liberality and
good judgment of the board depends
the efficiency of the public schools. A
parsimonious policy, which has been
pursued in the past relative to sal
aries of teachers, is discouraging to
those who have devoted the best part
of their lives to fit themselves for
the responsible duties of instructors.
The present board is composed most
ly of wealthy men, who seem opposed
to paying teachers in proportion to
the increase in wages in every
other line, commensurate with the in
creased cost of living and clothing.
Wealthy men, as a rule, care nothing
for the comfort of teachers, always
wanting to get all the work they can
for the least pay. A man of moderate
means is more liberal and if the pub
lie schools of Astoria are to retain
their oresent standing and efficiency
it would be better to eliminate wealth
and elect a man, who knows of his
own experience, what salaries should
be paid. Dr. H. L. Henderson, a can
didate for school director, is a friend
of the oublic schools and the teach
ers and will stive better satisfaction
than one who has plenty of ' this
world's goods, and favors cheap labor
at starvation wages. This is submit
ted to the voters of Astoria with the
hope they will vote in favor of the
public schools and fair compensation
for the teachers.
