few complaints recently from the

UMATILLA COUNTY COMMIS
SIONER VISITS ASTORIA TO
INSPECT COUNTY'S NEW
BUILDING. ,
Horace Walker, commissioner of
Umatilla county, came to Astoria
yesterday with the object in view of
looking over the new court house.
Umatilla county is contemplating es-
tnhtwhincr steel vaults and other
"." rj -----
modern improvements, and it wa.i
thmto-ht best to insoect the Astoria
building before anything , was done.
Mr. Walker's visit is a pretty good n
dcation that the fame of Clatsop's
court house has spread far and wide
throughout the state. During tne at-
tr-nmnn Mavor Herman Wise played
the host to Mr. Walker and showed
him about the city, and it was evident
that the Umatilla commissioner, who
had never been in Astoria before, was
agreeably surprised with the pros
perity and appearance of the city.
While at the Irving Club Mayor
Wise borrowed a telescope so that
the visitor miuht set a good view of
the ciirroundine county from the
htnffa The mavor and his iniest la
boriously climbed to a coign of vant
age and then assayed to use the glass.
But it wouldnt work, first tne
mayor tried to get the hanged thing
into focus, and then the visitor tried
to work the blamed thing. Finally
they gave it up, They both thought a
joke had been worked on them, out
later the owner showed them tnat
nothing was required but a simple
turn of the wrist to make a mouse
look as big as a baby elephant a
mile away.
