GONE FAR ENOUGH.
We are voicing the sentiment of
the people ot this section of Oregon
when we declare that the confusion
and turmoil and discredit of the- re
markable attitude of the Republicans
in this State toward the Democracy,
has gone far enough; that the de
cency and dignity of Republican Ore
gon calls a halt and for the thought
of readjustment and redemption with
in the lines of that party.
Blanket the past; and draw a line
of demarcation that shall gradually
clear the field of ambiguity and re
store the partisan balance, to the
strength and honor of the State at
home and abroad, and especially
abroad; for we may be able to
smother our own sense of the inequities
and palliate our own folly and ad
versities, but we have no right to
covet nor demand the respect of our
fellows on the outside so long as we
adhere to the absurd and false
premise we have set up.
Of what possible advantage will
the election of Geo. E. Chamberlain
to the United States Senate be to the
State of Oregon?. He will be simply
another cipher in the minority at
Washington; he is not statesman
enough to rise above his associates
there; he can achieve nothing for us;
he will not represent us in the real
sense of the term even if the last man
in Oregon had voted for him, simply
because he will not be of the com
manding majority that does things
and gets things. He has, had his
share of honors at the hands of men
to whom he is politically diametrical
ly opposed by every experience and
instinct of his life, and he may drop
ped with decency and safety and
justice.
We know, with measurable cer
tainty, that the man who goes, to
Washington next winter from this
State, is to be a Portland man; but
we still insist that even if it be a
Portland man, he must be a Repub
lican and the biggest and brainiest of
the lot; a man who will take a place
of command on the instant he takes
his seat in the Senate; a man who will
be observed, honored, looked up to,
waited upon; whose word and war
rant will pass current with the mas
ters in state-craft, who will have in
fluence and prestige from the moment
the toga falls on his shoulder. With
such a man in the upper branch of the
National congress; with Hon. Charles
W. . Fulton in the cabinet (and we
believe things are shaping themselves
to that end), Oregon would again
hold conspicuous and definite place
in the realm of governmental power
and influence, and the partisan at
home would have proud and justifi
able predicate for realigning himself,
and working, honestly and honorably,
to the nobler ends of party ameliora
"tJort and achievement. , v
. Speaking, again, for the clean and
conservative Republicans of th'rs part
of the State," we say, that if ihi new
Senator from Oregon must come from
" Portland, in the interest of all we
have pleaded, send Hon. Harvey W.
Scott there, and save the situation at
once and for all time. He is none
. too old to wind out a splendid career
at Washington; he has won the best
and highest reward within the gift
of Oregonians; he would be strong
and helpful and commanding as any
man in the group of 92 delegated
there; he is of the ultra type of our
best men. and his election would
crown the noblest ambition of his
long and useful life and inspire him
to the greatest and finest work of
that life.
GET DOWN TO BUSINESS.
This is the year in which Astoria
must do a lot of reasoning and safe
thinking. Events and men have thrust
upon her a number of important
propositions, the mis-handling of
which will prove very disastrous; and
all are to be settled at the December
polls. We are taking time by the
forelock and shall constantly urge
the wisest treatment of the larger
issues and help acquaint the people
with the essentials that demand their
deepest interest and in doing this we
shall be actuated by no spirit of
politics or partisan rivalry, but upon
the simpler and straighter hypothesis
of the good of Astoria.
It must be remembered that there
are 13 councilmen to be elected as
well as the complete official staff of
the city; that' the water commission
is to be elected, de nuovo, and that
there are a number of exceedingly
serious charter amendments to be
treated. All of which should invoke
the best public concern, and this may
not be attained without the most ac
tive and intelligent thinking on the
part of the honest citizen to whom
the future of Astoria is something
more than the present and paltry
success of some of her people.
One by one we are going to take
up the cardinal matters and discuss
them from the standpoint of utility
and the conservation of the best
municipal standards; and to this end
we cordially invite communications
apropos of those things that appeal
strongest to the individual sense of
the elector and which are charged
with the greater elements of interest
and value.
SHOEING THE COBBLER.
It occurs to us that the most
righteous demonstration to be made
with the new law of public re-call
just passed by the people, is to apply
it in the summoning of its author,
sponsor and champion, United States
Senator Jonathan Bourne, Jr., from
place and function at Washington.
There is no juster nor more expedient
method of testing the efficacy of the
mandate; and its instant success
might make it even more palatable
than it appears to have been at the
recent polls. At all events, it would
try out the faith of the Senator in his
newest legal creation, and afford a
line of amusement for the people at
large for sometime to come.

THE ROSE FESTIVAL.
PORTLAND, June 10. - The
great Rose Festival of Portland is
now a nuitter of history. It was
easily the most eventiful week Port
land ever enjoyed. The convention
of the Pacific Coast Ad Men's League
started at the Commercial Club Mon

dinner that was simply perfect.
Admiral Swinburne and the other
officers of the Charleston, the York
town and six torpedo boats partici
pated in every event, and had much
to do with the success of the pro
gramme. The parades were all su
perior, the automobile races were re
markable and the attendance both of
visitors and home people at each and
every feature, is conclusive proof of
the prosperity of the Pacific Northwest.
The Western Master Printers As
sociation, composed of all the leading
printers between the Rocky Moun

convention at Portland last week.
They are now thoroughly organized
and every important city on the Coast
is represented upon the Executive
Board.

Why
Doan's Kidney Pills cure the cause
of disease, and that is why the cures
are always lasting. This remedy
strengthens and tones up the kidneys,
helping them to drive out of the body
the liquid poisons that cause back

Wm. Joyce, 412 Duane street, As
toria, Ore., says: "At the time I be
gan using Doan's Kidney Pills, I was
enduring a great deal of suffering
from my kidneys. The secretions
from these organs were so profuse
as to give me t great deal of annoy
ance. As a result of not getting my
proper rest at night, I would rise in
the morning feeling more tired and
weak than when t went to bed and
during the day felt weak and languid.
The slightest exertion caused severe
pains through my back and hips. I
tried liniments and plasters but did
not receive any relief until my atten
ton was drawn to Doan's Kidney
Pills. I desired to give them a trial
and procured a box of Chas. Roger &
Son'a drug store. They helped me o
greatly that I procured a further sup
ply,' used them and was entirely
cured. I am now in unusually good
health and do not hesitate to attribute
same to the use of Doan's Kidney
Pills."
