CHECK COMPROMISE
Will Be the Big Question of Taft
Managers
TAFT AND ANTI-TAFT FORCES
Frank II. Hitchcock and Associates
Considerbly Surprised When Extent
to Which Compromise Movement
Had Found Favor Became Manifest
CHICACO, Juno 9,The outcome
of the contents for the scats of the
Louisiana detonation to the Republi
can National Convention will be the
chief point of interest when the Na
tional Committees of the party re
assembles this morning. The big
question will be whether the Taft
managers have succeeded in checking
the movement for a compromise by
which the delegation from a state
will be split between Taft and anti
Taft force. There was an exchange
of messages between Chicago and
Washington last night on this point
but the effect thereof will not be man
ifest until the vote is taken in the
committee meeting today.
Frank li. Hitchcock and his asso.
ciates were considerably surprised
yesterday when the extent to which
the compromise movement had found
favor became manifest. The oratory
of the Louisiana contestant could
not hold the attention of the com
mittee members in the face of the
development and a hurried adjourn
ment followed.
Were the Louisiana cases the only
ones involved there might perhaps he
a disposition on the part of the Taft
managers to yield the compromise.
Rut they point out that similar con
tests are pending from Mississippi,
Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma,
South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas
and Virginia and that if the split dele
gation plan prevails in the Louisiana
case there will be no good reason to
anticipate anything other than de
mands for eight more compromises.
1 ne tact that the negro question is
involved in all these states is the
stumbling block. Advocates of the
compromise argue that if the Forak
delegations are recognized partially,
the Taft forces will gain strength
among the negro voters of the North
many of whom are believed to
be
convinced that the National Commi
it
tec is discriminating against their
race by its decisions in favor of th
"Lily Whites" of Florida and Georgia.
Mr. Hitchcock points out in reply
to this argument that many of th
it . . i . .
delegates wno nave oceii seated are
negroes and that this element of the
party is certain to have plenty of rep
resentation on the floor of the con
vention.
Indications that the advance guard
of the big crowds which will be here
for the convention next week wi
soon be on the ground became man
fest early today. The New Yor
men, 1000 strong, will arrive Satur
day. They having telegraphed to thi
effect last night. They have been as
signed 200 rooms in the Auditorium
The next largest delegation will com
irom rennsyivania. its members are
expected Saturday night and most o
the Illinois party will also be here at
that time.
The big marching clubs that are to
participate in the demonstration
convention nan Wednesday morning
of next week have been assigned
the Great Northern Hotel. Most
the marchers will be here Saturday.
Their part in the convention is ex
pected to be one of the most spec
tacular features of the gathering.
i iic cunninuee in cnarge ol ar
rangemcnts announced the musical
program today. There will be no
; dearth of harmony as exemplified by
brass instruments and in addition
vocal selections of a nature calculated
to enthuse the delegates will be part
of the program. The first day of the
convention a concert of patriotic mel
odies will precede the formal calling
to order. "Rag-time" will be the fea
ture ot the second day and grand
opera selections will usher in the
third day when it is expected the
presidential nominees will be namei
1 he vice-presidential nominees will
probably not be named before Fri
day.
