Price Of Beef Rises 1 to 2 Cents On
Hundred Pounds.
NEW YORK. June 8.-Bccf pack

beef supply. Since last week the
price has risen from 1 to 2 cents on
100 pounds and the price is now
around one hini greater than it was
the first part of June, 1W7. The sharp
rise in prices is said to he due entirely
to the shortage in the supply of cat
tle in the market and already there is
talk of having to have beef which was
exported to Kngland last winter ship
ped back to this country in cold stor
age. As a matter of fact the exporta
tion vi beef from N'ew York is pract
ically nothing and the packers not
able to fill their contracts even with
half the amount of beef they have en
gaged to ship. It is known that a
number of the packers are letting
contracts go entireby by the board
and are paying their freight rate con

Chicago Contemplates Exposition On
Lake Front.
CHICAGO, June 8 In a confer
ence between T. Edward Wilder
general secretary of the Chicago As
sociation of Commerce and Gustave
Frohman, yesterday, the idea of ;
permanent exposition on lines simila
to those of the World's Columbia Ex
position, but smaller in scale, was dis
cussed at length.
The principle was made that once
many Chicagoans recognize that the
old exposition on the lake front was
in a large measure the parent of the
large world's fair and much of the
giant business of earlier days in
Chicago was fostered, if not born in
the old exposition building. This per
manent exposition would be develop
ed under the auspices of the Associa-
ion of Commerce and housed in the
great building which the association
contemplates. The keynote of the
exposition sceme would be
Music for the whole People of the
West and Middle West, a rallying
ground for art as well as a place for
fostering the genius of the West in
music and art with the underlying
purpose ot creating a great attraction
for visitors and the advertising of all
Chicago's business interests.
