HEIR TO $10,000,000
Will Spend it to Make People
Happy
MOSTLY FOR BAD PEOPLE
or Chicago because I can reach
farther from cither of those places
than any other",
If a Man Needs $500 to Compete His
Happiness and Success C. W. Aver
ill Will Give Him the $500 he
Says.
CHICAGO, June 6.-A despatch to
the Tribune from Los Angeles, Cal.,
says:
C. W. Averill, who recently inherit
ed $10,000,000 from an aunt of Mas
sachusetts, declares he is going to
make two people happy.
After a visit to his old home in
Farmington, Maine, he will establish
headquarters in a big city, perhaps
Chicago, where he says all who need
Belp and deserve it can find it.
"I am not going to be a fool about
this", he said yesterday "but if being
a fool is being deceived occasionally,
all right. I have succeeded in piling
up a few hundred thousand by my
own exertion but can never spend
the income from $10,000,000. "If a
man has $300 and needs as much
more to carry out his plans and
make him a success and thereby
liappy I propose to give him his add
ed $500.
"Another tthing, I am going to
telp bad people as well as good. The
good people, churches and respect
able folks care for them, but the bad
have no one but the devil and the
police.
"I want to help the intemperate,
the convict, the girl who has to hang
her head, the man who has made a
failure of himself. Lots of us cannot
resist temptation you know. I have
set the number I will aid at 20,000,
but if I succeed in helping them I
will look for 20,000 more. I suppose
my headquarters will be in New York
GREAT DAMAGE BY FIRE
The Gladstone Gold Mine Building
Damage $150,000.
SILVERTOW Colo.. June 6.-Fire
last night destroyed all of the build
ing of the Gold Mine at Gladstone,
nine miles from here, causing a loss
of $150,1X10, and endangering the lives
of the entire neighborhood, where the
men sleeping in the hunk houses, the
machinery was disarranged by the tire
and heat and the air fans put out of
commission. All of the men were
rescued, however, and the only ac
cident occured to Henry Sanger, who
was perhaps fatally hurt, by jumping
from the second-story of the bank
house. The fire originated in the
terminal house of the mine and is at
tributed to incendiarism.
TO MUCH FOR "UNCLE JOE"
By the side of a certain Illinois sub
urban railway stands a fertilizer fact
ory which gives out a particularly of
fensive smell. A lady who frequent
ly has-occasion to travel on this line
always carries with her a bottle of
lavender smelling salts. One mom
ing Speaker Cannon took the seat be
ide her. As the train neared the
factory, the lady opened her bottle
of salts. Soon the car was filled with
the horrible odor of the fertilizer.
The Speaker stood it as long as he
could, then addressing himself to the
lady, whom he saw holding the bot
tle to her nose, he said: "Madam,
would you mind putting the cork in
that bottle?" Success Magazine.

CLAY AND THE SALARY GRAB
" 'Quinn,' said an old member one
day, 'Iheard you worrying about the
mileage. Did you ever hear the
story of Clay and the salary grab?'
No, I replied.
" 'When Clay was Speaker,' he con
tinued, 'along about 1816, the crowd
raised their salaries to $1,500 a vear.
There was a great howl all over the
country, and when Clay reached home
in Kentucky, he found old one-armed
John Pope, a Federalist, out after his
scalp to beat the band, and all the
Clay adherents ominously silent.
Worried and anxious Clay sought out
his old barber, who had always been
enthusiastic in his advocacy and who
happened to be an Irishman. "I trust
I may count on your hearty support
as usual?" Clay asked. "Faith, Mr.
Clay," said the Irish barber, "I think
I shall vote at this time for the man
who can get but one hand into the
Treasury." J
